Fotona 5D is a non-ablative laser treatment protocol that combines two wavelengths. Nd:YAG (1064 nanometers, targeting the deeper dermal layers) and Er:YAG (2940 nanometers, targeting the skin surface), across five distinct treatment modes in a single session. The “5D” refers to the five modes: intraoral treatment, fractional deep pigmentation, bulk dermal heating , controlled surface treatment, and a final full-face light peel step.
Because Fotona 5D uses non-ablative wavelengths (working below the skin surface), downtime is typically minimal compared with ablative resurfacing lasers. The dual-wavelength approach means one treatment can address concerns across multiple skin layers, from deep collagen remodelling to surface tone and texture.
If you’re considering laser skin tightening and want to understand what may suit you, one of our AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) registered nurses will assess your skin, discuss your goals, and determine whether Fotona 5D is likely to be appropriate for you.
What can Fotona 5D treat?
Fotona 5D is used across a range of skin quality and mild-lifting concerns because its five-mode approach targets different tissue layers in a single session. The most commonly discussed applications are:
Jawline definition
Softening or lack of definition along the jawline.
Skin firmness
Loss of firmness on the face and neck.
Nasolabial folds
Lines forming from nose to mouth.
Under eye laxity
Skin laxity, crepiness, or fine lines around the eye area.
Neck skin laxity
Loss of firmness and mild laxity on the neck.
Perioral lines
Fine lines forming around the mouth and lips.

How we approach Fotona 5D at Luxe Lips
Every consultation at Luxe Lips follows the same structured steps, whether you’re here for skin tightening on the lower face, mild non-surgical lifting concerns, or overall skin quality. Your nurse will:
Go through your medical history and check for contraindications
Examine your skin type, the areas you’re addressing, skin quality, and any specific concerns
Discuss your skin goals and what you would like to improve
Map out a plan (areas, approach, aftercare) only if you decide you’d like to go ahead
Luxe Lips operates to the standards of the Aesthetic Beauty Industry Council (ABIC), the Aesthetics Practitioners Advisory Network (APAN), and the Cosmetic Nurses Association (CNA).
What to expect from your Fotona 5D journey
Your Fotona 5D journey at Luxe Lips runs in three stages: consultation, treatment session, and recovery.
Personalised treatment plan
Your plan is built during your consultation, based on your skin type, the concerns you’re addressing, and treatment areas.
You’ll see the plan including the target areas, approach, session count, spacing, and aftercare, before any treatment happens, with no obligation to proceed.
If you’d like to learn more about personalised treatment options, book your consultation now.
Considered treatment session
Your treatment is carried out by your nurse in a calm, unhurried session. A full Fotona 5D session typically runs 60 to 90 minutes, including preparation, all five modes across the treatment area, and post-session review.
Fotona 5D is generally considered comfortable. The Nd:YAG dermal heating feels warm rather than sharp, and topical numbing is generally not required for most people. Cool air or gel is often used during and after the session.
24/7 real-person aftercare
Because Fotona 5D is largely non-ablative, downtime is typically minimal. Most people are comfortable returning to everyday activities the same day. Either way, our team remains by your side with thoughtful aftercare and ongoing support.
While unlikely, if you experience any adverse effects, please contact your local clinic so one of our aesthetics team can follow up to ensure maximum safety and satisfaction.
Your Fotona 5D lifecycle
How Fotona 5D treatment progresses over time
A Fotona5D protocol is structured as a course of sessions. Standard practice involves three to four sessions, scheduled at intervals of four to six weeks. The spacing is adjusted based on the concern being treated and the skin’s biological response between visits.
Because Fotona 5D works by triggering the body’s own collagen remodelling response, changes progress gradually over weeks and months as new collagen forms in the treated areas. Most people begin to notice initial changes to skin firmness and texture within four to six weeks of their first session, with the more complete outcome of a treatment course typically visible around three to six months after the final session.
Results from a Fotona 5D course are not permanent. Newly stimulated collagen naturally degrades over time as part of the ongoing ageing process. Some people may benefit from a maintenance session every twelve to eighteen months, or a shorter maintenance course after two to three years, particularly for concerns like skin firmness and mild non-surgical lifting. Your nurse will discuss what maintenance approach may suit you based on how your initial course settled.
Sun protection is the single most important factor in maintaining Fotona 5D results. Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily is generally recommended, along with careful management of sun exposure during and after your treatment.
Your nurse may also discuss supportive skincare, barrier support, appropriate topical care, retinoids where appropriate, and complementary treatments (Rejuran, PRF, exosomes microneedling for skin quality; thread lifts for structural support) that pair with Fotona 5D to sustain the outcome.

Let’s ANSWER your Fotona 5D laser treatment questions!
If you’re wondering about how the Fotona 5D laser treatment can
help you age beautifully, check out our guide below.
How should I prepare for a Fotona 5D treatment?
Avoid deliberate sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks beforehand. Tanned or sun-damaged skin raises the risk of an adverse reaction and may mean the treatment has to be postponed.
Stop retinol, retinoids, and prescription-strength actives such as tretinoin or hydroquinone for a minimum of seven days before your appointment. These thin the outer skin layer and increase sensitivity to laser energy.
Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, sunscreen, and moisturiser, so the energy is delivered evenly across the treatment area.
Your nurse will confirm the full pre-care steps for your skin when your session is booked.
What is the difference between Fotona 4D and Fotona 5D?
Fotona 4D and Fotona 5D are both multi-mode Fotona laser protocols. Fotona 4D uses four modes; Fotona 5D adds a fifth step for additional surface refinement.
Both use the same two wavelengths (Nd:YAG and Er:YAG) and the same core intraoral mode.
Which protocol is more appropriate for your specific concerns is discussed at consultation. For most people asking about “Fotona 4D” or “5D face lift”, the 5D protocol is what’s currently offered at Luxe Lips.
Who is a good candidate for Fotona 5D?
Fotona 5D is generally suited to people looking to address skin firmness, texture, and mild non-surgical lifting on the face, neck, or jawline. It works with the skin’s own remodelling response, so it suits those wanting gradual change across a course of sessions rather than a single dramatic result.
It is less suited to significant structural laxity or heavy excess skin, where a different approach may be more appropriate.
Recent sun exposure, certain skin conditions, and pregnancy can affect suitability. A consultation with one of our AHPRA-registered nurses is the way to confirm whether Fotona 5D fits your skin and goals.
Do you offer Fotna 5D at your Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, and Brighton clinics?
While we offer a range of treatments at all three of our boutiques, our advanced device-based services, including Fotona 5D, are performed exclusively at our Camberwell clinic.
As our primary technology hub, the Camberwell location is easily accessible from all areas of Greater Melbourne. We regularly welcome patients traveling from:
- The Inner East & Boroondara: Hawthorn, Hawthorn East, Deepdene, Canterbury, and Surrey Hills.
- The South & Bayside: Brighton, Elwood, Hampton, Caulfield, and Elsternwick.
- The North & West: Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Ascot Vale, Brunswick, and Flemington.
While our Moonee Ponds and Brighton clinics focus on our core treatment range, our Camberwell team is fully equipped to handle your Fotona 5D consultation and treatment in a single appointment.
What does downtime look like after Fotona 5D?
Downtime is typically minimal. Most people experience some redness and mild warmth across the treated area for the first 24 to 48 hours, which usually settles within one to three days.
Because the treatment works largely below the skin surface rather than removing it, many people return to everyday activities the same day. Some notice light surface peeling over the following few days as the skin refreshes.
Sun protection matters most during recovery. Your nurse will provide specific aftercare guidance suited to your skin and the areas treated.
Does Fotona 5D hurt?
Fotona 5D is generally considered comfortable. The Nd:YAG dermal heating feels warm rather than sharp. Most people describe it as a warm sensation. The Er:YAG surface work at the end of the session can feel warmer, particularly for the peel step.
Topical numbing is generally not required for most people, though it can be discussed at consultation if you’re particularly sensitive. Cool air or a cooling gel is often used during and after the session to keep the skin comfortable.
The intraoral mode uses a mouth guard and feels similar to holding warm water in your mouth which most people find tolerable.
What does Fotona 5D cost at Luxe Lips?
Fotona treatments at Luxe Lips start from $499 for a focused single-area session, such as Laser Genesis (Frac3). A full-face and neck Fotona 5D session starts from $999.
Because Fotona 5D is usually worked through as a course rather than a one-off, most people opt for a multi-session plan. The three-session Skin Transformation Plan is $2,600.
The most accurate cost information for your specific concerns is provided during your consultation, once your nurse has assessed the areas and mapped out a plan.
Is Fotona 5D safe for darker skin types?
Fotona 5D can be considered across a range of Fitzpatrick skin types, with the settings adjusted to each individual.
Its Nd:YAG wavelength reaches deeper into the skin and interacts less with the melanin in the surface layer than shorter-wavelength lasers do. This is one reason it is often selected for medium-to-darker skin tones, where surface-targeting lasers carry a higher risk of pigment disturbance.
All laser treatment still carries some risk, and melanin-rich skin needs careful assessment. Your nurse will review your skin type and discuss the safest approach at your consultation.
Can I combine Fotona 5D with other treatments?
In many cases, Fotona 5D may be considered alongside other treatments as part of a broader skin quality plan. Common combinations include Fotona 5D with Morpheus8 for combined non-ablative and RF microneedling approaches.
Fotona 5D alongside Rejuran or PRF for skin quality support between sessions, thread lifts for structural laxity where dermal heating alone isn’t enough, and exosomes microneedling as post-treatment support.
Whether a combination approach is suitable for your specific concern is discussed at consultation. Any combination is planned around what’s clinically appropriate for you.
What are the risks of Fotona 5D?
Fotona 5D carries risks that your nurse will go through before treatment. Common, temporary effects include redness, warmth, mild swelling, and light surface peeling, which usually settle within a few days.
Less common risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in medium-to-darker skin tones, temporary pigment change, prolonged redness, or blistering. Scarring and infection are rare.
The treatment is not suitable during pregnancy, with recent sun exposure or tanning, an active skin infection in the area, or certain conditions affecting healing. These are checked at your consultation, and following your aftercare reduces the risk of complications.
