Microneedling uses controlled micro-injuries to stimulate your skin’s own collagen and elastin production. Whether you have had standard microneedling, microneedling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma), or microneedling with exosomes, the aftercare principles are largely the same, with a few variation-specific notes covered in detail below.

Knowing what to put on skin after microneedling and understanding the microneedling aftercare day by day timeline will protect your result and support a smooth recovery. Your practitioner tailors every microneedling session to your individual skin. Needle depth, speed, and the choice between standard, PRP, or exosome protocols are all decisions made based on your skin condition, concerns, and goals.

Before your microneedling appointment

Preparation that makes a genuine difference to your recovery
Avoid sun exposure for one week

UV-damaged skin responds less predictably to microneedling and is more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Stay out of direct sun for at least seven days before your appointment and avoid sunbeds entirely.

Stop retinol and active skincare 3–5 days before

Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, and any exfoliating products should be paused at least three days before treatment. These ingredients thin or sensitise the skin barrier, which increases the risk of irritation during and after the procedure.

Arrive with clean skin

Come to your appointment with a freshly cleansed face, free of makeup, SPF, and moisturiser. This allows the practitioner to prep and treat the skin efficiently without residue interfering with the needling depth.

No fake tan

Remove any fake tan from the face at least five days before your session. Self-tanner residue can be driven into the micro-channels, causing uneven pigmentation or irritation.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Immediately after microneedling, your skin will be red, warm, and feel tight — similar to moderate sunburn. This is entirely expected. The micro-channels created during treatment are open for several hours, which is why strict skincare rules apply in the first 24–48 hours.

If PRP was applied, you may notice a yellowish tint on the skin. This is the plasma itself and will absorb or wash off. Redness may be slightly more pronounced than standard microneedling because of the additional biological activity at the surface.

If exosomes were used, patients typically report less irritation and a faster initial recovery. The exosome solution supports cellular communication and may accelerate the skin’s repair response in the first few days.

Pinpoint bleeding during the session is normal and generally stops within minutes. Some oozing or mild weeping of serum from the skin can occur in the first few hours post-treatment.

Microneedling aftercare guidance

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos

Keep the skin hydrated

Apply a plain, fragrance-free hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is ideal) as directed by your practitioner. Hydration supports the healing process and reduces the sensation of tightness.

Use only gentle products for the first 3–5 days

Stick to a gentle, soap-free cleanser and a hydrating serum — nothing else. Your skin barrier is compromised by the micro-channels, so everything you apply absorbs more deeply than usual.

Apply SPF 50+ from day two onwards

Once any oozing has settled (usually by day two), apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every morning. Post-microneedling skin is significantly more photosensitive, and unprotected sun exposure is the single biggest risk for hyperpigmentation.

Drink plenty of water

Internal hydration supports skin recovery. Aim for at least two litres of water per day in the week following treatment.

Sleep on a clean pillowcase

Use a fresh, clean pillowcase on the night of your treatment. Bacteria from a used pillowcase can enter the open micro-channels and increase the risk of breakouts or infection.

The Don’ts

Do not use retinol or active ingredients for 5–7 days

Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, niacinamide at high concentrations, and any exfoliating products must be avoided until your skin barrier has fully recovered. Introducing actives too early causes irritation, stinging, and potential damage to new skin cells.

Do not apply makeup for 24 hours

Makeup can harbour bacteria and block the micro-channels during the critical first day of healing. Wait a full 24 hours before applying any makeup to the treated area.

Do not touch your face unnecessarily

Your hands carry bacteria. Avoid touching, rubbing, or picking at the skin. If you need to apply product, wash your hands thoroughly first.

Do not use fragranced products

Fragrance is an irritant at the best of times. On freshly microneedled skin with open channels, it can cause stinging, redness, and a delayed recovery. This includes fragranced moisturisers, toners, and micellar waters.

Do not exercise or sweat heavily for 24–48 hours

Sweat is salty and slightly acidic, and it introduces bacteria to the treatment area. Avoid the gym, saunas, hot yoga, and any activity that causes heavy perspiration for at least 24 hours, preferably 48.

Do not swim or use hot tubs

Chlorinated pools, ocean water, and hot tubs are breeding grounds for bacteria and irritants. Avoid them for at least 72 hours post-treatment.

Skincare and nutrition after Microneedling

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Days 1–3: Minimal products only

Cleanse with a gentle, soap-free cleanser (lukewarm water only — no hot water). Apply a fragrance-free hydrating serum. Nothing else. No toners, no essences, no sheet masks. Your skin barrier is open, and less is genuinely more during this phase.

Day 2 onwards: SPF is non-negotiable

Apply a physical or mineral SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning. Reapply if you are outdoors for extended periods. Post-microneedling hyperpigmentation is almost always caused by inadequate sun protection during recovery.

Days 5–7: Gradual reintroduction of actives

Once the skin feels settled — no tightness, no flaking, no sensitivity — you can begin reintroducing your regular products one at a time. Start with vitamin C or niacinamide, then add retinol a few days later. If any product stings or causes redness, stop and wait another day or two.

Products to avoid entirely during recovery

Retinol, AHAs (glycolic, lactic), BHAs (salicylic acid), vitamin C serum (for the first 3–5 days), benzoyl peroxide, physical scrubs, fragranced moisturisers, and alcohol-based toners. These are all barrier-disrupting or irritating on compromised skin.

Food & Drink

Meal and Drink Planning During Recovery

The 48-hour alcohol restriction is the single most important dietary consideration. When dining out or socialising, opt for sparkling water, herbal tea, or coconut water. Try to drink at least two litres of water daily. These keep you hydrated.

Support Healing Through Nutrition

Water-rich foods like soups, smoothies, cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens, complement the two litres of daily water recommended above. A nutrient-dense diet rich in vitamin C and zinc supports tissue repair and helps your result settle optimally.

Avoid very hot food and drinks for the first few hours

Heat increases blood flow to the treated area, which can worsen swelling. Allow hot drinks and soups to cool to a comfortable temperature before consuming them on the day of treatment.

Standard microneedling

Standard microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries across the treatment area using fine, sterile needles. These micro-channels trigger the body’s wound-healing cascade, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin fibres over the following weeks and months.

This is the foundation treatment. A hydrating serum is typically applied during the procedure to keep the skin comfortable and support the glide of the device. Recovery follows the general aftercare timeline described above, with redness resolving within 2–3 days and collagen remodelling continuing for up to 12 weeks.

Microneedling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma)

When PRP is combined with microneedling, a small volume of your own blood is drawn before the procedure, processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and then applied to the skin during or immediately after needling.

The micro-channels act as delivery pathways, allowing the concentrated growth factors to penetrate deeper than topical application alone. PRP enhances the collagen-stimulating effect and can accelerate healing.

What to expect differently: You may notice a yellowish or golden tint on the skin immediately after treatment — this is the plasma itself and is completely normal. Redness may be slightly more intense than standard microneedling because of the additional biological activity. The yellowish tone washes off or absorbs within a few hours.

Aftercare is identical to standard microneedling. Keep the PRP on the skin for as long as your practitioner recommends (typically at least 4–6 hours or overnight) before cleansing.

Microneedling with exosomes

Exosome therapy is a newer addition to microneedling protocols. Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles that carry signalling molecules between cells. When applied to microneedled skin, they enhance cellular communication, support the skin’s repair processes, and may promote faster and more efficient regeneration.

Exosome solutions are applied topically during or after the microneedling procedure, using the open micro-channels for deeper penetration.

What to expect differently: Many patients report less irritation, less prolonged redness, and a faster initial recovery compared to standard microneedling alone. The skin may feel calmer within the first 24 hours. However, the same aftercare rules apply — the micro-channels are still open, and the skin barrier is still compromised regardless of how comfortable the skin feels.

Do not mistake reduced irritation for a fully healed barrier. Continue following the skincare restrictions for the full 3–5 days even if your skin feels fine earlier.

Your treatment plan

How microneedling fits into your skin investment strategy

At Luxe Lips, the consultation is the most important part of the entire journey. Before any treatment is performed, your practitioner conducts a full facial assessment, listening to your concerns, evaluating your skin condition, and designing a staged, multi-session plan tailored to you. There is no standardised package thinking here; every plan is individualised.

Microneedling sits within the Skin Quality phase of our treatment philosophy, which follows a clear sequence: Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement. Skin quality is the foundation. Without healthy, well-stimulated skin, structural treatments like dermal filler and refinement treatments like anti-wrinkle injections cannot deliver their full potential.

Microneedling is frequently combined with PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) in the same session for amplified collagen stimulation. Research supports this approach: Vesala et al. (2021) demonstrated that microneedling combined with injectable platelet-rich fibrin produced enhanced facial rejuvenation outcomes compared to microneedling alone. The micro-channels created during needling allow the concentrated growth factors from PRF to penetrate deeper, creating a synergistic effect.

Beyond same-session combinations, microneedling is strategically sequenced alongside other treatments as part of a 12-month skin investment plan. Energy-based devices such as Fotona 5D are used as longevity tools, not optional add-ons, to provide continuous skin stimulation and preventative maintenance. Bioremodelling supports the skin matrix between microneedling sessions, and the combination of these treatments drives gradual structural optimisation over time.

Clinical evidence supports this multimodal approach. The HARMONY Study (Weinkle et al., 2018) demonstrated that comprehensive, minimally invasive treatment plans combining multiple modalities produced significantly higher patient satisfaction compared to single-treatment approaches. Baranska-Rybak and Antoszewska (2021) further showed that combining skin-quality treatments with personalised skincare created superior outcomes.

Your practitioner will explain exactly how microneedling fits within your broader plan, whether that involves PRF in the same session, energy devices in subsequent weeks, or bioremodelling to support skin quality between appointments. Every recommendation is based on your individual assessment, skin condition, and goals.

When you’re ready, you can schedule a session to discuss your next steps at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery

Day 1 (day of treatment)

Redness resembling moderate sunburn. Skin feels tight, warm, and sensitive. Possible pinpoint bleeding spots or mild oozing. With PRP, a yellowish tint may be visible. Avoid cleansing if your practitioner has asked you to leave the serum or PRP on overnight.

Day 2–3

Redness begins to fade significantly. Skin may feel dry, tight, or slightly rough. Light flaking or peeling is possible, particularly around the nose, chin, and forehead. This is the micro-channels closing and the top layer of skin turning over. Do not pick at flaking skin.

Day 3–5

Skin is normalising. Any remaining dryness or flaking resolves. Sensitivity reduces. You may begin to notice a subtle improvement in skin texture and luminosity.

Week 1–2

The post-microneedling glow begins to appear. Skin looks smoother, more even, and has a healthy radiance. This is the early result of increased cell turnover.

Weeks 4–12

Collagen remodelling continues beneath the surface. Improvements in fine lines, acne scars, pore size, and overall skin texture continue to develop over this period. Full results from a single session are typically visible at the 8–12 week mark.

Ongoing — multiple sessions

For optimal results, a course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is generally recommended. Your practitioner will advise on the ideal number based on your skin concerns and treatment goals.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

A clear breakdown to help you assess your recovery

Normal (No need to worry)

  • Redness similar to sunburn for 1–3 days
  • Tightness and warmth in the treated area
  • Light flaking or peeling from day 2–4
  • Mild dryness during the first week
  • Pinpoint bleeding or mild oozing on day one
  • These are all part of the expected healing process. They indicate that the skin’s repair response is functioning as it should.

Frequently asked questions about microneedling aftercare

Can I wear makeup the day after microneedling?

Yes, from 24 hours post-treatment you can apply mineral or non-comedogenic makeup. Avoid heavy, oil-based foundations and ensure all brushes and sponges are freshly cleaned to minimise bacterial exposure.

Wait at least 5–7 days, and only reintroduce retinol when your skin shows no signs of sensitivity, tightness, or flaking. Start with a lower concentration if possible and monitor for any irritation.

Small whiteheads or a mild breakout can occur in the first few days as the skin purges. This is usually temporary. If you develop painful, pus-filled spots or a widespread breakout, contact the clinic.

A course of 3–6 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart is generally recommended for concerns like acne scarring, fine lines, or uneven texture. Your practitioner will create a treatment plan tailored to your skin.

PRP uses your own blood — specifically the concentrated platelets and growth factors — to enhance the healing and collagen-stimulating response. Exosomes are lab-derived extracellular vesicles that enhance cellular communication and regeneration. Both aim to amplify the results of microneedling, but they work through different biological mechanisms. Your practitioner can advise which is more suitable for your goals.

Direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least two weeks, and SPF 50+ must be worn daily from day two onwards. Post-microneedling skin is highly susceptible to UV damage and hyperpigmentation. Even incidental sun exposure (walking to the car, sitting near a window) counts.

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, which significantly reduces discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild prickling or vibration. Sensitive areas like the forehead and upper lip may be slightly more uncomfortable.

Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for at least 24–48 hours. Sweat introduces bacteria and salt into the open micro-channels, which can cause irritation or breakouts. Light walking is fine from day one.

For the first 3–5 days, use only a gentle cleanser and a plain hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is ideal). Add SPF 50+ from day two. Avoid all active ingredients, fragrances, and exfoliants until the skin barrier has fully recovered.

Yes. Microneedling is often part of a comprehensive skin plan at Luxe Lips. It may be combined with Fotona 5D for collagen remodelling, Lumecca for pigmentation, or dermal fillers for volume. Your practitioner will recommend the most appropriate combination and timing based on your individual skin assessment.

Yes — a plain, fragrance-free hyaluronic acid serum is ideal for the first 3–5 days after microneedling. It supports hydration without irritating the compromised skin barrier. Avoid hyaluronic acid products that contain added fragrances, essential oils, or active ingredients like retinol or vitamin C, as these can cause irritation when absorbed through open micro-channels.

Microneedling is a core skin quality treatment — it builds the foundation. At Luxe Lips, it is often combined with PRF in the same session for enhanced collagen stimulation, and sequenced alongside bioremodelling and energy-based devices as part of a 12-month skin investment plan. Your practitioner designs a staged approach following a Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement sequence, ensuring each treatment amplifies the results of the next.
