Hybrid biostimulatory filler treatments combine two mechanisms: hyaluronic acid (HA) and calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). HA is commonly used to provide temporary volume, while CaHA is commonly associated with collagen-stimulating properties. This biostimulatory filler aftercare guide covers everything you need to know about your recovery, from immediate post-treatment care to long-term collagen stimulator aftercare and maintenance.

Because this is both a filler and a biostimulator, the aftercare has elements of both –  and there are important safety considerations unique to this product that you need to understand. Your medical practitioner has selected this treatment specifically for your anatomy and goals, and the injection sites and technique have been tailored to your individual needs.

Before your hybrid biostimulatory filler appointment

Preparation prior to your appointment can support the recovery process

AVOID BLOOD-THINNING MEDICATIONS FOR ONE WEEK

Stop taking fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and aspirin-based products at least one week before your appointment. These may increase the likelihood and severity of bruising. If you take prescription blood thinners, do not stop them without consulting your prescribing doctor  – but do let your medical practitioner  know.

AVOID ALCOHOL FOR 48 HOURS BEFORE

Alcohol thins the blood and dilates blood vessels. Drinking in the two days before treatment may increase bruising risk. This applies to all types of alcohol, including wine and beer.

INFORM YOUR PRACTITIONER OF ALL MEDICATIONS

Disclose every medication, supplement, and herbal remedy you are currently taking. Some interact with the procedure or with the anaesthetic used during treatment. This includes over-the-counter products.

CONSIDER STARTING ARNICA

If your medical practitioner recommends it as part of your treatment plan, you may opt to take arnica tablets two to three days before your appointment and continue for the first few days after treatment. It is available from most pharmacies without a prescription.

UNDERSTAND THE COMMITMENT

Hybrid biostimulatory fillers contain components that respond differently to dissolving agents compared with pure hyaluronic acid fillers. While hyaluronidase can act on the HA portion, it does not affect ingredients such as CaHA. Because of this, dissolving outcomes may be limited. It’s important to discuss your goals, expectations, and the planned treatment areas thoroughly with your practitioner so you can make an informed decision.

DISCLOSE RECENT AESTHETIC TREATMENTS THE COMMITMENT

If you have received injectable treatments, energy-based procedures, or surgery within the past four to six weeks, let your medical practitioner know. Recent procedures may influence when or how hybrid biostimulatory filler can be safely administered. Your practitioner will consider this information when planning your treatment.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Hybrid biostimulatory fillers are injected into deeper layers of the tissue, sometimes with a cannula. This approach is commonly used in areas such as the mid-face, jawline, chin, and temples.

You may notice a visible change right after the procedure because of the presence of the hyaluronic acid component. Immediate appearance can vary from person to person.

Swelling may occur and is often most noticeable in the first 24 to 48 hours. The area may look fuller at first due to this swelling.

Bruising may occur,  particularly in areas with a rich blood supply, such as the mid-face. While the cannula technique may reduce this risk, it may not be eliminated. Bruising may take approximately five to ten days to resolve.

The treated area may also feel firm to the touch initially. This is possible as the CaHA microspheres are suspended within the HA gel, and the product needs time to settle. Over the following weeks, the firmness softens as the treated area settles.

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos
Leave the treated area alone

Do not touch, massage, or press on the treated area unless your practitioner specifically instructs you to. Unnecessary pressure or straining may affect the settling phase of the treated area.

Use a cold compress if needed

If swelling is uncomfortable, apply a clean, cold compress gently to the area for 10 minutes at a time with breaks in between. Do not apply ice directly to the skin. Cold application helps manage swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours.

Keep your head elevated

Sleep with an extra pillow for the first two nights. Keeping your head above heart level may reduce fluid accumulation in the treated area and help with overall swelling management. Avoid sleeping face-down for at least 48 hours.

Stay hydrated

Hyaluronic acid-based treatments interact with the body’s natural tissues. Maintaining general hydration may support general skin health following the procedure.

Monitor for hard lumps

Firmness in the treated area can occur in the first few weeks. However, if you notice a hard, well-defined lump that does not change or soften over two to three weeks, contact the clinic. Your practitioner can assess whether additional management is needed. Photograph any areas of concern in good lighting as this helps the clinical team assess changes over time.

Be patient with the evolving result

Recovery and visible changes may occur at different stages. You may see changes from the HA component right after the treatment, but the collagen-stimulating effect of the CaHA microspheres unfolds over approximately three to six months. How the area settles varies between individuals, and the appearance may evolve over the weeks and months following treatment.

Contact the clinic with any concerns

If something does not look or feel right at any point during your recovery, call the clinic immediately. The Luxe Lips team has a 24/7 medical professional available. With this product in particular, early assessment of any unusual symptoms is important.

The Dont's

Do not massage the treated area

Unlike some hyaluronic acid fillers where gentle massage may be recommended, hybrid biostimulatory fillers should not be massaged. Manual manipulation may influence placement of the CaHA microspheres.

Do not drink alcohol for at least 48 hours

Alcohol may increase blood flow, promote swelling, worsen bruising, and contribute to dehydration. Wait a minimum of 48 hours before consuming any alcohol.

Do not exercise for 24 to 48 hours

Elevated heart rate and blood pressure may increase swelling and bruising risks. Avoid the gym, running, hot yoga, and any strenuous physical activity for at least 24 hours, preferably 48. Light walking may be allowed from the day of treatment.

Avoid heat exposure for 48 hours

Saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, hot showers directed at the treated area, and prolonged sun exposure may increase swelling and affect recovery. Keep the treated area cool and protected for at least two days.

Do not apply makeup for at least 12 hours

The injection sites require time to heal. Applying makeup introduces bacteria and may clog the tiny puncture wounds. Wait at least 12 hours – ideally 24 – before applying any makeup to the treated area.

Avoid other injectable treatments for at least two weeks

Do not schedule fillers, wrinkle treatments, bioremodelling, or other injectables for at least two weeks after treatment unless your practitioner specifically advises otherwise. The product needs time to settle.

Do not attempt to dissolve this product yourself

If you have concerns about your result, contact the clinic rather than seeking dissolution elsewhere. This product contains CaHA microspheres that do not respond to hyaluronidase in the same way as hyaluronic acid. Partial dissolution requires careful clinical judgement.

Skincare and nutrition hybrid biostimulatory filler

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Keep your routine gentle for 48 hours

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and a plain hydrating moisturiser for the first two days. Avoid any products that contain active ingredients, fragrance, or exfoliating properties on or near the treated area.

Avoid retinol and active ingredients for 3 to 5 days

Usage of Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and strong vitamin C serums should be paused on the treated area for at least three days. These may irritate the skin while the injection sites are healing.

SPF is essential

Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning from the day after treatment. UV exposure may affect the skin’s healing response and compromise the treatment’s settling processes.

Food & Drink

Meal and drink planning during recovery

The alcohol restriction previously covered remains in place during your recovery. Opt for water, herbal tea, or sparkling water when socialising to maintain overall hydration and support your body’s healing response.

Support healing through nutrition

Also include water-rich foods in your meals — soups, smoothies, and fresh fruits all contribute. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants and protein supports your body’s recovery process.

Avoid very hot food and drinks for the first few hours

Heat increases blood flow to the treated area, which may increase swelling. Allow hot drinks and soups to cool to a comfortable temperature before consuming them on the day of treatment.

How the dual mechanism works

Hybrid biostimulatory fillers contain two different components that contribute to how the product behaves in the tissue.

The immediate component — hyaluronic acid (HA)
The HA gel is offen associated with hydrating and volumising properties. The initial change in appearance may be noticeable right after treatment. Like other HA-based products, it is gradually broken down by the body over time. How long it remains varies between individuals.

The gradual component — calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA)
Some hybrid fillers also contain CaHA microspheres. In these products, CaHA contributes to the filler’s structure and may support gradual changes in the treated area. These microspheres are gradually broken down by the body over time. The way these changes appear, and the timeframe in which they occur, differ from person to person.

What this means for your overall treatment
You may notice changes at different stages following treatment. The most appropriate time for your practitioner to assess your skin’s response to the treatment is typically at a later review appointment, based on your individual plan.

Understanding dissolving considerations for hybrid biostimulatory fillers

Important safety considerations

Pure hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. f a complication arises or the patient is unhappy with the result, the filler can be broken down and removed.

Hybrid biostimulatory filler contains both HA and CaHA. While the HA component does respond to hyaluronidase, the CaHA microspheres do not respond to hyaluronidase in the same way as hyaluronic acid filler.

In the event of a vascular complication, hyaluronidase may be administered to dissolve the HA component and reduce the overall volume of the product – this is an important part of the emergency management. The CaHA component is gradually broken down by the body over time.

These considerations are part of what’s discussed during your consultation. This treatment is typically designed for patients with areas the practitioner has assessed the anatomy and vascular risk profile of.

If you have any concerns about your result at any point, contact the clinic immediately rather than seeking treatment elsewhere. The clinical team understands the specific properties of this product and can advise on the most appropriate course of action.

Your treatment plan

How hybrid biostimulatory filler bridges skin quality and structure

At Luxe Lips, treatment planning follows the Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement sequence. Hybrid biostimulatory filler sits between skin quality and structural filler. Its dual mechanism –  hyaluronic acid combined with calcium hydroxylapatite addresses both skin quality and volume changes in a single treatment.

Published research, including work by Aguilera et al. (2023) and Tam et al. (2025), discusses the properties of calcium hydroxylapatite and how biostimulatory products may be used within combination treatment plans. Your medical practitioner may draw on this evidence, along with your individual assessment, when determining whether this type of treatment is suitable for you.

Hybrid biostimulatory fillers may be introduced once general skin quality has been addressed through treatments such as bioremodelling. After this foundation is in place, your practitioner may recommend a hybrid filler to support structural volume in selected areas.

In some treatment plans, the CaHA microspheres may offer gradual support for areas that typically require attention more frequently.

If your practitioner prescribes the 5-5-5 massage protocol, it is important to follow it carefully.

Massage the treated area 5 times per day, for 5 minutes each time, for 5 days.  This technique may support even integration of the product place in the area being treated. Your practitioner will demonstrate the correct technique before you leave the clinic.

Not all treatment areas or injection approaches require this protocol, so follow your practitioner’s specific instructions.

  • With bioremodelling: Bioremodelling treatments, like Rejuran, are often used to support overall skin quality, including hydration and suppleness. Medical practitioners may combine them with a hybrid biostimulatory filler to address both surface-level and deeper structural concerns.
  • With energy-based devices: Energy-based devices (such as Fotona 5D) may be incorporated to support skin quality or firmness at various tissue depths. When used alongside hybrid biostimulatory fillers, they can form part of a layered approach in which each modality targets different levels of the face.
  • With wrinkle treatments + filler: this sequencing allows medical practitioners to address different concerns, such as movement-related lines, general skin quality, or volume, in a structured, stepwise manner. Treatments are typically spaced out so each can settle before the next is introduced.

The consultation is a central part of the overall process.  Your medical practitioner will determine an appropriate sequence based on a full facial assessment, your individual anatomy, skin quality, and long-term goals.

Treatment planning is personalised and conservative, with an emphasis on gradual changes and maintaining natural proportions.

When you’re ready, you can schedule a session to discuss your next steps at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery

Day 1 (Day of treatment)

Volume changes may be noticeable and appear more pronounced due to swelling. Swelling may peak within the first 12 to 24 hours. Tenderness, tightness, and minor bruising at injection sites typically occur. Apply a cold compress gently if needed.

Days 2–3

Swelling may begin to subside but is still noticeable. Bruising may become more visible as it develops. The treated area may feel firm — this is typical  and reflects the CaHA microspheres within the HA gel. Continue cold compress use if helpful.

Days 4–7

Swelling continues to improve. Bruising transitions through colour changes (purple to yellow-green). The treated area begins to feel slightly softer as it settles. Most patients feel comfortable returning to normal social activity.

Weeks 2-4

Firmness reduces as the HA component continues to settle. The  changes in the beginning may continue to evolve as swelling subsides. CaHA microspheres long-term process begins.

Months 1-3

The CaHA component may further support changes in skin quality and firmness of the treated area.

Months 3-6

Changes following the use of HA and CaHA may be observed during this phase. At this stage, you may wish to review your results and discuss any future treatment options with your medical practitioner.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

Normal

  • Swelling that is more pronounced on one side is common in the early healing phase
  • Bruising at or near injection sites, ranging from faint to significant
  • Tenderness when touching the treated area
  • Firmness or a dense feeling in the treated area – the CaHA microspheres contribute to this
  • Mild numbness or tingling that resolves within hours to days
  • Minor asymmetry in the first two weeks (swelling and product settling affect each side differently)

These are common parts of the healing process and often resolve without intervention. If you are uncertain whether a symptom is normal, contact the clinic as it is always better to ask.

Contact the clinic promptly if you experience

  • !Swelling that increases significantly after day two rather than improving
  • !A hard, well-defined lump that does not soften or change after two to three weeks
  • !Signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
  • !Persistent asymmetry that does not improve as swelling resolves (allow at least 3-4 weeks)
  • !Skin discolouration that does not follow a normal bruising pattern

Seek Urgent Care Immediately

  • Sudden vision changes — blurred vision, partial vision loss, or any visual disturbance
  • Skin that turns white (blanches) and does not return to its normal colour within a few seconds
  • Severe, disproportionate pain that increases rather than decreases over time
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Signs of anaphylaxis — widespread swelling, hives, dizziness, rapid heartbeat

These symptoms may indicate a vascular event or allergic reaction. Do not wait to see if they resolve. Call the Luxe Lips emergency line immediately and, if directed, present to your nearest emergency department. Time is critical.

Your follow-up appointment

A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled four to six weeks after your hybrid biostimulatory filler treatment. This allows time for the initial swelling to resolve and the product to integrate, while still being early enough to address any concerns.

At your follow-up, your practitioner will show how the treated area is settling, including — volume, symmetry, and integration.

Because the collagen-stimulating effect is still developing at this stage, a second assessment at the three to six-month mark may also be recommended to evaluate the full outcome.

Bring any questions about your recovery, photos you have taken during healing (which is encouraged), and any areas of concern. If you would like to discuss combining this treatment with other procedures as part of a comprehensive plan, your follow-up is the ideal time.

If you are ready to discuss your treatment plan, book your consultation now.

Common questions about hybrid biostimulatory filler aftercare

What is a hybrid biostimulatory filler?

It is an injectable treatment that combines hyaluronic acid (HA) with calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. The HA component contributes to initial volume, while the CaHA component is associated with gradual changes over time. Individual responses vary.

The HA component may remain for approximately 12 to 18 months while the changes associated with CaHA microspheres may develop gradually over time. Individual results vary depending on metabolism, lifestyle, and the area treated.

Not fully. The HA component can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, but the CaHA microspheres cannot. This means the product cannot be completely reversed in the way that a pure HA filler can. This is an important consideration that your practitioner will have discussed with you before treatment.

The product is injected deep using a cannula or needle, and local anaesthetic is typically used to improve comfort. Sensations vary, but some patients describe a feeling of pressure rather than sharp pain. Some tenderness at the injection site is normal after the anaesthetic wears off.

Some changes may be noticeable on the day of treatment due to the HA component, though swelling can affect appearance. Gradual changes may occur over the following months. Assessment of how the treatment has settled may be considered at the three to six-month mark.

Common treatment areas include the mid-face (cheeks), jawline, chin, and temples. Your medical practitioner will recommend the most appropriate areas based on your individual anatomy and goals.

Some firmness is normal in the first few weeks as the product settles. If you notice a hard, well-defined lump that does not soften after two to three weeks, contact the clinic for assessment. Photograph the area in good lighting to help the clinical team evaluate changes. LED therapy may be recommended.

Most patients experience swelling and possible bruising for several days. Every patient responds differently — some feel comfortable returning to social activities the next day, while others prefer to allow three to five days for visible signs to settle. This is a medical procedure and should not be treated as though it has no recovery period.

If prescribed by your practitioner, massage the treated area 5 times per day, for 5 minutes each time, for 5 days.  This technique may support even integration of the product place in the area being treated. Your practitioner will demonstrate the correct technique before you leave the clinic. Not all treatment areas require this protocol — follow your practitioner’s specific instructions.

Traditional hyaluronic acid fillers primarily add volume. Hybrid formulations combine HA with calcium hydroxylapatite. These components behave differently in tissue over time.

It is often part of a multi-treatment plan designed around the Skin Quality, Structure, Refinement sequence. Bioremodelling may precede it to optimise skin quality as a foundation, and energy-based devices can complement it for additional support  Your practitioner will design the appropriate sequence and timing based on your individual anatomy, skin quality, and goals. This is always determined during your consultation.
