Lip Filler Aftercare

Your complete recovery guide from the Luxe Lips clinical team

Educational Resource — This page is intended as a general educational guide for patients who have received or are considering lip filler treatment. It does not constitute medical advice. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your treating practitioner.

Your lip filler treatment at Luxe Lips Melbourne is done, and the aftercare plays an important role on how well the changes settle. Understanding lip filler aftercare in the first 48 hours is especially important.

Follow these instructions to help minimise swelling, support overall recovery and allow for a natural-looking appearance, from the moment you leave the clinic through to your follow-up appointment.

Before your lip filler appointment

Preparation before treatment may assist in supporting your treatment experience

AVOID BLOOD-THINNING SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICATIONS

Stop taking fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and aspirin-based products at least one week before your appointment. These may increase the likelihood and severity of bruising. If you take prescription blood thinners, do not stop them without consulting your prescribing doctor — but do let your medical professional know.

NO ALCOHOL FOR 48 HOURS BEFORE TREATMENT

Alcohol thins the blood and dilates blood vessels. Drinking in the two days before treatment may increases bruising risk. This applies to all types of alcohol, including wine and beer.
Inform your practitioner of all medications

INFORM YOUR PRACTITIONER OF ALL MEDICATIONS

Disclose every medication, supplement, and herbal remedy you are currently taking. Some may interact with the procedure or with the anaesthetic used in the filler. This includes over-the-counter products.

CONSIDER STARTING ARNICA

If your medical practitioner recommends it as part of your treatment plan, you may opt to take arnica tablets two to three days before your appointment and continue for the first few days after treatment. It is available from most pharmacies without a prescription.

DISCLOSE ANY HISTORY OF COLD SORES

If you have ever had a cold sore — even once, even years ago — tell your medical practitioner before treatment. The herpes simplex virus lives dormantly in nerve tissue, and lip filler injections may trigger a reactivation in some individuals. Your practitioner may recommend antiviral medication to take before and after treatment. Taking recommended precautions may help reduce the likelihood of a flare-up during the healing period.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Understanding the normal healing response

Swelling may occur and is most noticeable d within the first 12 to 24 hours. Your lips may also look temporarily fuller – larger than intended do not panic and do not judge your outcome on day one.

Bruising is common, particularly if you are prone to it or have not avoided blood thinners beforehand. Small bruises may appear at injection sites and may take five to ten days to resolve fully.

Tenderness and a feeling of firmness may also occur as the filler needs time to settle. Hyaluronic acid fillers interact with water and may influence how the treated area feels in the days following treatment.

A branded Luxe Lips cold compress shaped to fit your lips will be given to you.Gentle cold application in the first few hours is advised.

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos

Stay Hydrated

Hyaluronic acid binds water. Drinking plenty of water supports overall recovery and settling of treatment. Aim for adequate daily fluid intake.

Apply a Cold Compress

Apply the provided Luxe Lips cold compress gently to your lips for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. Do not press firmly, as light contact is sufficient. Cold application helps reduce swelling and provides comfort. Use it frequently in the first 24 hours.

Keep the Head Elevated

Sleep with an extra pillow for the first two nights. Keeping your head above heart level may reduce fluid accumulation in the lips and help manage swelling.

Use a Gentle Lip Balm

Keep your lips moisturised with a plain, fragrance-free lip balm. Your lips may start to feel dry and tight as they heal. A simple balm like Vaseline, lanolin, or a plain ceramide balm is ideal. Avoid anything medicated, flavoured, or exfoliating.

Be patient with the result

Changes from the lip filler procedure are not final on the day of treatment itself. It may take over two to four weeks for the area to settle, but the overall progress may be assessed at your six to eight week follow-up. Do not request additional filler before this assessment. Overfilling is one of the most common pitfalls in aesthetic medicine, and patience is the antidote.

Contact the Clinic

If something does not look or feel right, call the clinic. The Luxe Lips team has a 24/7 medical professional available. No question is too small and no concern is too early.

The Dont's

Avoid Alcohol for 48 Hours

This is a common yet avoidable mistake patients make after a lip filler procedure. Alcohol may increase blood flow, worsen swelling, and promote bruisingIt also contributes to dehydration, which may not support optimal recovery. Avoid drinks like wine, beer, and cocktails for at least 48 hours after treatment. If you have a social event planned, consider timing your treatment accordingly.

Do not exercise for 24-48 Hours

Elevated heart rate and blood pressure may increase swelling and bruising risk. Avoid the gym, running, hot yoga, and any strenuous physical activity for at least 24 hours. Light walking is generally acceptable.

Do not use straws

The pursing motion required to drink through a straw may put pressure on the lips following treatment and can affect the recovery process. Drink from a glass or bottle for the first 48 hours.
Do not kiss or apply pressure to your lips

Avoid kissing for 24 to 48 hours

Any firm pressure on the lips while the filler is settling is discouraged. This includes resting your face on your hands or sleeping face-down.

No lipstick or lip products for 24 hours

The injection sites need time to heal. Applying lipstick, lip gloss, or lip liner within the first 24 hours may introduce bacteria and increase infection risk. Opt for plain, clean lip balms.

Avoid heat exposure for 48 hours

Saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, hot showers directed at the face, and prolonged sun exposure may all increase swelling. Keep your face cool and avoid direct heat for at least two days.

No Dental Work for 2 Weeks

Dental procedures require your mouth to be held open for extended periods and involve pressure on and around the lips. Where possible, schedule dental appointments at least two weeks after treatment.

Do not massage your lips unless instructed

Unless your practitioner specifically tells you to massage a particular area, refrain from massaging your lips. Unnecessary touching or massaging may affect treatment area and introduce bacteria.

Skincare and nutrition after lip filler

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Keep It Simple Around the Lips

For the first week, avoid skincare products that directly contact your lips beyond a gentle lip balm. This means no lip scrubs, no exfoliating lip masks, and no retinol-based lip treatments. Your lips need to heal without interference.

Avoid Active Ingredients Near the Lip Border

If you use retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or vitamin C serums as part of your routine, keep them away from the lip area for at least five days. These ingredients may irritate freshly treated skin and increase sensitivity.

Sunscreen Matters

Once the injection sites have closed (after 24 hours), apply SPF 50+ lip balm if you will be outdoors. UV exposure may contribute to post-inflammatory pigmentation from bruising and affect overall healing.

Food & Drink

Meal and Drink Planning During Recovery

The 48-hour alcohol restriction covered remains. When dining out or socialising, opt for sparkling water, herbal tea, or coconut water. These keep you hydrated and support optimal healing.

Avoid Hot Drinks for the First Few Hours

Very hot coffee, tea, or soup may increase blood flow to the lip area and contribute to swelling. Let drinks cool to a comfortable temperature before sipping, and sip carefully. You may initially find the area around your lips feels numb or awkward.

Skip Spicy Food on the First Day

Spicy food may cause a burning or stinging sensation on freshly treated lips and increase localised swelling. Stick to mild, easy-to-eat food for the first 24 hours.

Support Healing Through Nutrition

Water-rich foods like soups, smoothies, cucumber, watermelon, and leafy greens complement the two litres of daily water previously recommended. A nutrient-dense diet rich in vitamin C and zinc supports tissue repair.

Cold sore history

Essential reading if you have a history

If you have ever had a cold sore at any point in your life,  the herpes simplex virus can remain dormant in nerve tissue. Lip filler injections create micro-trauma that may reactivate the virus which can trigger an infection directly on your freshly treated lips.

A cold sore outbreak after lip filler may cause uncomfortable pain, compromise the healing and settling process, , and in rare cases lead to scarring or infection.

Prevention is straightforward: tell your practitioner about your history before treatment. You may be advised to take antiviral medication before and after your appointment. This helps reduce risk of virus reactivation.

If you forgot to mention your history and notice tingling, itching, or the early signs of a cold sore after treatment, contact the clinic immediately. Early antiviral intervention may reduce severity or duration of symptoms.

White patches on bruised areas

What they mean

Some patients notice white or pale patches appearing within or near bruised areas after lip filler. This understandably causes alarm, but in many cases it is part of the normal bruising process.

The white appearance is typically caused by temporary disruption to superficial capillaries in the area. You can perform a simple capillary refill test at home: press gently on the pale area with your fingertip, then release. If the colour returns quickly after releasing pressure, this is generally reassuring.

If the area remains white after pressing or if you experience pain alongside the paleness, contact the clinic immediately as this may indicate a possible vascular complication that requires prompt assessment.

LED therapy for bruising

LED light therapy may be offered by Luxe Lips as an optional supportive treatment following lip filler. It uses specific wavelengths of light and is sometimes used in aesthetic settings during recovery.

Some patients choose LED therapy if bruising is more noticeable than expected. Sessions are non-invasive and typically take around 20 minutes.

Your treatment plan

Why lip filler works best as part of a holistic approach

At Luxe Lips Cosmetic Clinic Melbourne, the consultation is a central part of the entire aesthetic journey. Your practitioner listens first, assesses your full facial structure, and builds a staged, multi-session plan tailored to you- never a standardised package. Lip filler addresses volume and shape concerns, but it sits within a broader framework: Skin Quality first, then Structure, then Refinement.

In practice, lip filler outcomes may be supported when the surrounding skin is well-hydrated and in good condition. Bioremodelling treatments are sometimes scheduled before lip enhancement procedures — often two to four weeks in advance — to help improve skin hydration, elasticity, and overall skin quality. This sequencing can provide a foundation that may assist with smoother integration of subsequent treatments.

Energy-based skin laser treatments, such as Fotona 5D, may also form part of a longer-term approach to skin support. For individuals with concerns about perioral lines or skin laxity, these devices can be used to stimulate collagen remodelling and maintain skin quality over time. Where appropriate, practitioners may choose to perform energy-based treatments before structural injectables.

The HARMONY Study (Weinkle et al., 2018) explored patient experiences with multimodal treatment plans and reported higher satisfaction among those receiving combined approaches compared to single modalities. This reflects a broader clinical preference for gradual, ongoing facial optimisation rather than one-off procedures.

Your treatment plan is tailored to your individual assessment. Recommendations vary from person to person, and your practitioner will discuss suitable options during your follow-up appointment so the next steps in your longer-term plan can be outlined.

When you’re ready, you can schedule a session to discuss your next steps at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery

Day 1 (Day of treatment)

Lips may  look fuller due to swelling. Tenderness, tightness, and minor bleeding at injection sites are common. Apply cold compress frequently. Avoid eating messy or difficult foods.

Days 2–3

Swelling may begin to subside but is still noticeable. Bruising may become more visible as it develops. Lips may feel firm or lumpy as filler starts to settle. Continue cold compress use if helpful.

Days 4-7

Noticeable improvement in swelling. Bruising transitions through colour changes (purple to yellow-green). Lips begin to feel softer and more natural. Many patients feel comfortable returning to normal social activity.

Weeks 2-4

Filler continues to settle during this period. Hyaluronic acid binds water gradually, so changes in shape and volume may continue to evolve.  The appearance toward the end of this stage is often closer to the planned treatment result, though individual responses vary.

Weeks 6-8 (follow-up)

By this time, the filler has typically stabilised. A follow-up appointment provides an opportunity for your medical practitioner to review the treated area, assess overall balance, and discuss if any additional treatment may be appropriate.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

A clear breakdown to help you assess your recovery

Normal

  • Swelling that is more pronounced on one side (asymmetry in swelling is common)
  • Bruising at or near injection sites, ranging from faint to significant
  • Tenderness when touching the lips
  • A firm or lumpy texture as the filler settles
  • Dryness or peeling of the lip skin
  • Mild numbness or tingling that typically resolves within hours
  • White patches within bruised areas (perform the capillary refill test)

Contact the clinic promptly if you experience

  • !Swelling that increases significantly after day two rather than improving
  • !A hard lump that remains unchanged after two weeks
  • !Signs of infection — increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
  • !A cold sore outbreak (contact the clinic for assessment)
  • !Persistent asymmetry that does not improve as swelling resolves

Seek Urgent Care Immediately

  • Sudden vision changes — blurred vision, partial vision loss, or any visual disturbance
  • Skin that turns white (blanches) and does not return to its normal colour within a few seconds
  • Severe, disproportionate pain that increases rather than decreases over time
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Signs of anaphylaxis — widespread swelling, hives, dizziness, rapid heartbeat

These symptoms may indicate a vascular event or allergic reaction. Do not wait to see if they resolve. Call the Luxe Lips emergency line immediately and, if directed, present to your nearest emergency department. Time is critical.

Your follow-up appointment

A follow-up appointment is scheduled approximately six to eight weeks after your lip filler treatment. This appointment is considered an important part of the treatment process.

At your follow-up, your practitioner will assess symmetry, volume, and filler integration. If any additional treatment is considered appropriate, it may be discussed at this appointment. Seeking additional filler from another provider before your follow-up may increase risk of overfilling.

Bring any questions or concerns to this appointment. If you have taken photos during your recovery (which is encouraged), bring those too — they help your practitioner assess your healing trajectory.

If you are ready to discuss your treatment plan, book your consultation now.

Common questions about lip filler aftercare

How long does swelling last after lip filler?

The most significant swelling occurs in the first 24 to 48 hours and subsides substantially within the first week. Minor residual swelling can persist for up to two weeks. Treatment outcome  is typically assessed at approximately four to six weeks post-treatment.

It is generally recommended to avoid alcohol for a minimum of 48 hours after treatment. Alcohol may increase swelling and promote bruising.

Wait at least 24 hours before applying any lip products other than a plain, fragrance-free lip balm. This allows the treatment sites time to settle and may help minimise the risk of irritation or infection.

Some firmness and lumpiness can occur in the first one to two weeks post-treatment. Hyaluronic acid binds water gradually, and firmness often improves as swelling resolves. If a lump persists beyond two weeks, contact the clinic for assessment.

It is generally recommended to avoid strenuous exercises for 24 to 48 hours. Elevated heart rate and blood pressure may increase swelling and bruising. Light walking is usually considered appropriate, however individual advice should be confirmed during consultation.

Mild asymmetry can occur during the initial healing phase and is often related to swelling rather than product placement. Swelling may affect each side differently. Symmetry is typically reviewed once swelling has reduced, which may take several weeks.

Contact the clinic immediately. If you have a history of cold sores, antiviral medication may be recommended.  If an outbreak occurs, early assessment may help manage symptoms. Do not wait for it to develop fully before calling.

Lip filler typically lasts six to twelve months, depending on the product used, your metabolism, and your lifestyle. Areas of high movement (like the lips) tend to metabolise filler more quickly than less mobile areas.

It is generally recommended to avoid using straws for at least 48 hours following treatment. Repetitive pursing motions may place pressure on the treated area during the early healing period.

Fillers are designed to address volume and shape, but in some cases, a combination approach may be discussed. Treatments such as bioremodelling and Fotona 5D may be considered where clinically appropriate. Your medical practitioner can discuss suitable options during consultation.

It is generally appropriate to consume coffee after treatment, however very hot beverages may contribute to increased swelling during the initial recovery period. Allow drinks to cool to a comfortable temperature before consuming.

Common strategies are: apply the cold compress provided by the clinic for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow, stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol, heat exposure, and strenuous exercise. These measures support your body’s natural healing process.

At Luxe Lips, lip filler may be part of a holistic, staged approach. The framework is Skin Quality first, then Structure, then Refinement. Bioremodelling may be discussed prior to lip filler treatments  as it may support  overall skin hydration and structural balance. Energy-based treatments like Fotona 5D may also be included in your treatment plan. All treatment planning is determined during consultation based on clinical suitability.

It is generally recommended to avoid firm pressure on the lips, including kissing, for approximately 24 to 48 hours following treatment. Pressure during the early healing phase may influence swelling or sensitivity. Gentle contact may be more comfortable once initial swelling has reduced.

General recommendations may include minimising pressure on the lips, sleeping with your head slightly elevated, limiting repetitive pursing movements, temporarily avoiding strenuous activity, and avoiding alcohol during the initial recovery period.

It is generally advised to sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first few nights following treatment. Elevation may help manage swelling during the early recovery phase. Minimising prolonged pressure on the treated area may also be beneficial.
