Lumecca Aftercare

Your complete recovery guide from the Luxe Lips clinical team

Educational Resource — This page provides general aftercare guidance for patients who have received lumecca treatment. It does not constitute medical advice. If you have any concerns about your recovery, contact the Luxe Lips clinic directly.

Lumecca is an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device used to address concerns such as pigmentation, sun damage, vascular lesions (including redness and visible capillaries), and uneven skin tone. The device delivers broad-spectrum light that targets pigment and visible redness within the skin, and is commonly used in IPL treatments aimed at improving overall skin tone.

It is common for dark spots to temporarily appear darker after Lumecca treatment, which can occur as pigment responds to the light energy.  Recovery is generally straightforward, although appropriate aftercare – particularly sun protection – is important during the healing process.

This guide explains what to expect and how to care for your skin after Lumecca IPL treatment at Luxe Lips. Every treatment is tailored to the individual. Your practitioner adjusts settings based on your skin type, the nature of your concerns, and your treatment history.

Before your Lumecca IPL appointment

Preparation that makes a genuine difference to your recovery

SUN AVOIDANCE (FOUR WEEKS MINIMUM)

Sun exposure, tanning beds, and artificial tanning should generally be avoided on the treatment area for several weeks before your Lumecca session. This precaution is important for treatment safety.  Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin may increase the risk of complications such as burns, blistering, or pigmentation changes. If a tan is present, your medical professional may recommend rescheduling your session.

NO FAKE TAN

Self-tanner or spray tan should be removed from the treatment area before your appointment, ideally at least two weeks beforehand. Residual self-tanning products may interact with light-based treatments and increase the risk of burns or uneven pigmentation.

RETINOL AND ACTIVE SKINCARE

Discontinue retinol, retinoids, and exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs) for at least seven days before treatment to reduce skin sensitivity.

INFORM YOUR MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OF MEDICATIONS

Certain medications increase photosensitivity (sensitivity to light), including some antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and supplements such as St John’s Wort. Inform your medical professional of all medications and supplements you are currently taking.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Understanding the normal healing response

During Lumecca treatment, many patients notice a warm, light snapping sensation as each pulse is delivered. Most patients tolerate this comfortably, though sensitivity varies. A topical anaesthetic can be applied if preferred. Immediately afterwards, the treated area may appear flushed or slightly red, similar to mild sunburn.

Within the first 24 to 48 hours, pigmented areas such as sun spots, age spots, or uneven pigmentation may appear darker. This response can occur as pigment reacts to the light-based treatment. The spots may appear darker as pigment responds to the light energy and gradually moves toward the skin surface during the healing process.

Vascular lesions (redness, broken capillaries) may appear more prominent initially before beginning to fade. Some capillaries may appear less visible soon after treatment, while others may change gradually over time.

Lumecca aftercare guidance

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos

Apply SPF 50+ every single day

Sun protection after Lumecca treatment is strongly recommended. This is the single most important instruction in your aftercare. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning and reapply every two hours during outdoor exposure. UV exposure after IPL may contribute to new pigmentation changes in the treated area. A mineral sunscreen is recommended for the first week.

Let darkened spots shed naturally

Darkened pigment spots may form small micro-crusts over the coming days and gradually flake away, often within one to two weeks. Allow this natural process to occur without intervention. As these spots shed, the underlying skin may appear clearer.

Keep your skin hydrated

Apply a gentle hydrating serum and moisturiser to support the skin barrier during recovery. Products containing hyaluronic acid are commonly used because they provide lightweight hydration.

Use a gentle cleanser

Cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser for the first five days. Avoid anything containing acids, exfoliating particles, or strong fragrances.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors

In addition to sunscreen, physical sun protection can help reduce UV exposure to the treated skin. Wearing a hat during outdoor exposure is recommended for several weeks after treatment.

The Don’ts

Avoid skipping sunscreen during the recovery period

Unprotected sun exposure after Lumecca treatment may contribute to pigmentation changes in the treated area. Daily SPF 50+ sun protection is strongly recommended.

Do not pick at darkened spots or micro-crusts

As pigment darkens and begins to flake, do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate these areas. Picking can cause scarring, infection, and post-inflammatory pigmentation changes.

Do not use active skincare products for five days

Your medical professional may advise avoiding retinol, AHAs, BHAs, high-strength vitamin C, and exfoliating products for several days after treatment. These products may irritate sensitised skin during the recovery period.

Do not expose treated skin to heat

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and very hot showers for 48 hours. Heat exposure may contribute to redness or skin irritation during early recovery.

Do not apply fake tan for at least two weeks

Self-tanning products may cause uneven colour on healing skin and make it more difficult to assess the treated area.

Do not have another IPL session too soon

Treatment sessions are often spaced several weeks apart depending on individual factors. Allow the full healing cycle to complete before your next treatment. Your medical professional will advise on the appropriate timing.

Skincare and nutrition after Lumecca IPL treatment

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Cleanser

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser for the first week. Cream or micellar cleansers are commonly used during the recovery period. Avoid foaming formulas and any products that contain AHAs, BHAs, or physical exfoliants.

Hydrating serum

Hyaluronic acid serums are commonly used to provide lightweight hydration during the recovery period. Apply morning and evening.

Moisturiser

A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser can help maintain hydration and support the skin barrier during recovery. Avoid moisturisers containing retinol, strong actives, or essential oils during the first week.

Sunscreen (very important)

Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen is an important part of post-Lumecca skincare. Apply every morning and reapply every two hours when outdoors. Consistent sun protection is strongly recommended after treatment to help protect the treated skin.

Resuming active products

After several days, you may begin gradually reintroducing your usual skincare actives one product at a time, depending on how your skin feels. Start with the gentlest and allow a few days between each reintroduction. If the skin feels sensitive, wait longer.

Food and drink

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment. Alcohol dilates blood vessels, which can exacerbate redness and flushing.

Hydration

Staying well hydrated supports the body’s ability to process and clear the treated pigment. Aim for at least two litres of water daily in the week following treatment.

Sodium intake

Limit high-sodium foods for the first 48 hours. Excessive salt can lead to fluid retention, which may increase post-treatment swelling and puffiness in the treated area.

Temperature Considerations

Avoid very hot beverages, steaming soups, or spicy foods for 24 hours. These can cause internal heating and vasodilation, potentially increasing facial flushing and sensitivity.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants and healthy fats, such as leafy greens and berries. These support the skin’s natural healing process and help manage inflammation from the inside out.

Why your spots look worse before they look better

The darkening of pigmented spots after Lumecca treatment is one of the most common concerns — and one of the most important things to understand about how IPL works.

During treatment, light energy is delivered to the skin and may interact with pigment within the treated area.

As pigment responds to the light energy, it may gradually move toward the surface of the skin during the healing process.  This causes the spots to appear darker, more defined, and sometimes larger than they were before treatment.

Over the following days, these darkened spots may form small micro-crusts that resemble fine coffee grounds on the skin surface. These crusts gradually flake away as the skin continues to recover.  This darkening and gradual shedding process can occur as part of the skin’s response to treatment.

If pigment does not darken after treatment, your practitioner can assess whether additional sessions or different settings may be appropriate.  The key instruction during this phase: do not pick at the darkened spots. Let them shed on their own. Picking may increase the risk of scarring or pigmentation changes.

Your treatment plan

How Lumecca fits into your skin investment strategy

At Luxe Lips, a cosmetic clinic in Melbourne, Lumecca is rarely approached as a standalone treatment for pigmentation. Instead, it is often incorporated into a broader treatment plan designed to address multiple aspects of skin quality over time.

Within the Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement framework used at Luxe Lips, Lumecca is typically considered at the skin quality stage. It may be used to address concerns such as uneven pigmentation, sun damage, and visible redness, helping to create a clearer and more even skin tone that can support subsequent treatments where appropriate.

Because pigmentation and vascular changes are often only one component of overall skin ageing, your practitioner may discuss additional treatments depending on your individual concerns. Treatments that support skin quality – such as bioremodelling – may sometimes be considered alongside Lumecca as part of a broader treatment plan.

For patients with pigmentation alongside concerns such as skin laxity or texture changes, different technologies may also be incorporated depending on individual assessment. Energy-based treatments such as Fotona 5D, Morpheus8, or other skin-remodelling devices may be discussed where appropriate, and pigment-focused devices such as PicoSure may sometimes be sequenced with Lumecca to address different pigmentation patterns.

Research in aesthetic medicine has explored multimodal treatment approaches. The HARMONY Study (Weinkle et al., 2017) examined combination treatment strategies and reported higher patient satisfaction among individuals receiving multimodal aesthetic treatment compared with single treatments. Additional research has also explored combined treatment approaches in aesthetic practice (Tam et al., 2025; Suh et al., 2025).

Treatment plans are always individualised. In some cases, patients may undergo a series of Lumecca treatments followed by maintenance sessions if appropriate, depending on their skin type, pigmentation pattern, and treatment goals.

The consultation remains the most important step in the process. During your appointment, your practitioner will assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and design a staged treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Your next steps will be reviewed during your follow-up appointment at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery

Days 1–2

Mild redness and warmth across the treated area, similar to a light sunburn. Pigmented spots may begin to appear darker during this period. Vascular lesions (broken capillaries) may appear slightly more prominent. The skin may feel slightly sensitive.

Days 3–7

Darkened pigment spots may be more visible during this period.  Small micro-crusts may form over pigmented areas, sometimes giving the spots a ‘peppery’ or ‘coffee-ground’ appearance. Redness associated with vascular lesions may begin to improve. The surrounding skin often begins to settle during this time.

Days 7–14

Micro-crusts begin to flake and shed naturally. As the micro-crusts shed, the treated areas may appear lighter or less noticeable. Vascular lesions may continue to improve during this period. Changes in overall skin tone may become more noticeable during this stage.

Weeks 2–4

The treatment is generally considered to be at its most stable phase. Muscles remain relaxed, and lines may appear smoother. Individual perceptions of peak timing vary.

Subsequent Sessions

Some patients may undergo a series of Lumecca sessions spaced several weeks apart, depending on individual skin concerns.  Stubborn or deeper pigmentation may require additional treatments. Vascular lesions may respond after one or more treatment sessions.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

A clear breakdown to help you assess your recovery

Normal

  • Mild redness and warmth for a few hours after treatment
  • Darkening of treated pigmentation spots
  • Micro-crusting or ‘peppering’ over pigmented areas
  • Slight swelling in the treated area
  • Flaking or shedding of darkened spots over the following days or weeks
  • Vascular lesions may appear more noticeable before gradually improving
  • Mild sensitivity to touch for the first day or two

Darkening of pigment can occur as the skin responds to the light-based treatment. This can be part of the normal healing process following treatment. Patience during the shedding phase is essential.

Contact the clinic promptly if you experience

  • !Blistering or broken skin in the treated area
  • !Pain beyond mild sensitivity
  • !Pigment that remains darkened without shedding after an extended period
  • !White patches appearing in the treated area (possible hypopigmentation)
  • !Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or swelling
  • !New or worsening pigmentation after the healing phase

Seek urgent care if you experience

  • Severe blistering or burns
  • Signs of infection with systemic symptoms (fever, malaise)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms (widespread rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

Complications following Lumecca treatment are considered uncommon, but it is important to contact the clinic if you have concerns during recovery. If you have any concerns during your recovery, contact the Luxe Lips clinic immediately.

Your follow-up appointment

Lumecca treatments are often scheduled several weeks apart, depending on individual skin response and practitioner assessment. Some patients undergo a series of Lumecca treatments depending on the extent of pigmentation and individual treatment goals. Additional sessions may be recommended where appropriate.

At your follow-up appointment, your practitioner will assess the response to your previous session, photograph your progress, and determine whether further treatment is needed. Between sessions, consistent sun protection is strongly recommended. UV exposure may contribute to further pigmentation changes in the treated area.

If you notice any new or worsening pigmentation between sessions, contact the clinic before your next appointment.

If you are ready to discuss your treatment plan, book your consultation now.

Common questions about Lumecca aftercare

Why have my sun spots gotten darker after Lumecca?

This response can occur after Lumecca treatment as the skin reacts to the light-based energy. Lumecca uses light energy that interacts with pigment in the skin. As the treated pigment responds, it may appear darker before gradually forming small micro-crusts that shed over the following days. The darkening can be part of the skin’s response to treatment.

Some patients undergo a series of Lumecca treatments spaced several weeks apart, depending on their individual skin concerns and practitioner assessment. The number depends on the type, depth, and extent of the pigmentation or vascular concerns being treated.

Lumecca may be used to address vascular concerns such as visible capillaries, redness, and flushing.  The light energy interacts with blood vessels in the treated area, and changes in redness may occur over time as the skin responds.

Redness is often mild and may improve within several hours.  Some patients experience a flushed appearance for up to 24 hours, particularly if vascular lesions were treated.

Pigment spots may darken and shed over the following days or weeks as the skin recovers.  Changes in vascular lesions may occur gradually over time. Your medical professional can assess how the skin has responded to treatment during follow-up.

You may apply mineral-based makeup after 24 hours. Avoid heavy or occlusive foundations for the first few days to allow the skin to heal naturally.

Some patients describe Lumecca as a warm, snapping sensation during treatment. No anaesthetic is typically required. Sensitive areas may feel more intense, although the sensation is generally brief.

Sun protection is a very important part of Lumecca aftercare.  UV exposure after IPL may contribute to pigmentation changes in the treated area. Daily SPF 50+ sun protection is strongly recommended, along with physical sun protection such as a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.

IPL carries a higher risk of complications on darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) because melanin in the skin can absorb the light energy along with the target pigment. A thorough skin assessment during consultation is essential to determine suitability.

Lumecca uses broad-spectrum intense pulsed light (IPL) and may be used to address both pigmentation and vascular concerns. Laser treatments (such as PicoSure) use specific wavelengths that may be used to address particular pigment concerns. Your medical professional will recommend the most appropriate technology for your specific skin concerns.

The “coffee-ground” appearance refers to small micro-crusts that may form over treated pigment after Lumecca. These small flakes represent pigment that has responded to the light-based treatment and moved toward the skin surface during healing. They usually flake away gradually over the following days as the skin recovers. Do not pick at them, and apply SPF 50+ daily to protect the treated skin during recovery.
