PicoSure toning uses picosecond laser pulses applied to areas of the skin during treatment. As a non-ablative laser approach, it is designed to address pigmentation concerns while preserving the surface of the skin. Some patients notice temporary changes in the appearance of pigmentation in the days following treatment as the skin recovers.

While recovery following PicoSure toning is typically straightforward, following the recommended aftercare guidance, particularly sun protection, is important for supporting healthy skin recovery. This guide explains what to expect after your PicoSure toning session at Luxe Lips and how to care for your skin throughout the healing process.

Before your PicoSure toning appointment

Preparation before treatment can help support your recovery

SUN AVOIDANCE

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and all forms of UV tanning for a minimum of two weeks before your Picosure toning appointment. Tanned skin can respond differently to laser treatment and may increase the risk of complications, including burns or pigmentation changes.

RETINOL AND ACTIVE SKINCARE

Discontinue retinol, retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and any prescription actives for at least seven days prior to treatment. These products can increase skin sensitivity and may influence how the skin responds to treatment.

NO FAKE TAN

Remove all traces of self-tan or spray tan from the treatment area at least two weeks before your appointment. DHA-based tanning products may interfere with laser treatment and may increase the risk of uneven skin reactions.

CLEAN SKIN

Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup, sunscreen, and skincare products. This helps ensure the skin surface is clear for treatment.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Immediately after Picosure toning, your skin may appear mildly red or flushed, similar to a light sunburn. This typically resolves within a few hours. Most patients describe the immediate post-treatment sensation as warm and slightly tingly.

In the days following treatment, areas of pigmentation may appear temporarily darker or more noticeable. This can occur as the skin responds to the laser treatment. The appearance usually settles gradually over time as the skin renews. If you notice temporary darkening, this is a commonly observed part of the recovery process.

The overall skin may feel slightly dry or textured for a few days as the skin continues its natural recovery process. This is temporary and usually improves as the skin recovers.

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos

Apply SPF 50+ every single day

Sun protection is an important part of aftercare following PicoSure toning. UV exposure may contribute to pigmentation changes and may affect the skin during the recovery period. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning — even on overcast days and even if you are staying indoors near windows. Reapply every two hours when outdoors. A mineral sunscreen is preferred for the first week.

Keep your skin hydrated

Apply a gentle hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is ideal) and a simple moisturiser to support the skin barrier during the healing phase. Keeping the skin well hydrated can help support skin comfort and recovery.

Use a gentle cleanser

Wash your face with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser for the first five days. Avoid anything that foams aggressively or contains exfoliating ingredients.

Allow the skin to recover naturally

If areas of pigmentation become temporarily darker following treatment, allow the skin to recover naturally and avoid picking or scratching the area.

Wear a hat when outdoors

In addition to sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat whenever you are outdoors. Physical sun protection can help reduce UV exposure to the treated skin.

The Dont's

Do not skip sunscreen

Sun protection is an important part of aftercare following PicoSure toning. Apply SPF 50+ daily and minimise direct sun exposure while your skin is recovering.

Do not pick at darkened spots

If areas of pigmentation appear temporarily darker after treatment, avoid picking, scratching, or exfoliating the skin. Allow the skin to recover naturally to reduce the risk of irritation or pigmentation changes.

Do not use active skincare for five days

Avoid retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums at high concentrations, and any exfoliating or brightening products for at least five days after treatment. These products may irritate the skin while it is recovering from treatment.

Do not expose your skin to excessive heat

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, and very hot showers for 48 hours. Heat can trigger inflammation and increase the risk of pigmentation changes in sensitised skin.

Do not apply fake tan

Avoid self-tanners and spray tans for at least two weeks after treatment. These products may affect the appearance of the skin while it is recovering.

Skincare and nutrition after Picosure toning

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Cleanser

A gentle, pH-balanced, fragrance-free cleanser is all you need for the first five days. Cream or micellar cleansers work well. Avoid foaming cleansers and anything with exfoliating acids.

Hydrating serum

A hyaluronic acid serum applied to damp skin can provide lightweight hydration during recovery. Use morning and evening.

Moisturiser

A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser helps maintain the skin barrier. Avoid products containing retinol, niacinamide at high concentrations, or alpha hydroxy acids during the first week.

Sunscreen

SPF 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen is an important part of your aftercare routine. Apply every morning as the final step before leaving the house. Reapply every two hours during outdoor exposure. Consistent sun protection is strongly recommended following pigment-related treatments.

Resuming active products

After five to seven days, you may gradually resume your normal skincare actives. Introduce one product at a time, starting with the gentlest (such as vitamin C) before reintroducing retinol or exfoliating acids. If you experience any irritation, pause and allow the skin a few more days.

Food & Drink

Meal and Drink Planning During Recovery

The 48-hour alcohol restriction is the single most important dietary consideration. When dining out or socialising, opt for sparkling water, herbal tea, or coconut water. Try to drink at least two litres of water daily. These keep you hydrated.

Support healing through nutrition

Beyond the hydration advice above, include water-rich foods in your meals. Soups, smoothies, and fresh fruits all contribute. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants and protein supports your body’s recovery process.

Consider anti-inflammatory foods

While not a requirement, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts, flaxseeds), antioxidants (berries, leafy greens), and vitamin C (citrus, capsicum) support the body’s natural healing and collagen production processes.

Avoid very hot food and drinks for the first few hours

Heat increases blood flow to the treated area, which can worsen swelling. Allow hot drinks and soups to cool to a comfortable temperature before consuming them on the day of treatment.

Why your pigment gets darker before it gets better

One of the most common concerns patients have after PicoSure toning is the temporary darkening of pigmentation. This reaction – sometimes referred to as “peppering” – can occur in the days following treatment and may make pigment spots appear darker or more noticeable.

This change in appearance is commonly observed after pigmentation treatments. Over the following seven to fourteen days, the treated areas may form small crusts or flakes as the skin renews.

If this is your first PicoSure toning session, the temporary darkening can look concerning, but it is usually part of the normal recovery process. Your practitioner will explain what to expect based on your individual skin and treatment plan.

Your treatment plan

How PicoSure toning fits into your skin investment strategy

At Luxe Lips, a cosmetic clinic in Melbourne, PicoSure toning is not treated as an isolated pigmentation procedure. It is positioned within a broader skin investment strategy.

Within the Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement framework, PicoSure toning sits within the skin quality phase, where treatments focus on improving tone and visual clarity of the skin before structural or refinement procedures are considered.

As part of a long-term skin management approach, PicoSure toning may be used to address pigmentation concerns and support overall skin appearance over time.

It may also be incorporated into a coordinated treatment plan with bioremodelling, where different treatments focus on complementary aspects of skin quality.

For patients presenting with pigmentation alongside skin laxity, PicoSure toning may be sequenced with treatments such as Fotona 5D or Lumecca IPL within a structured treatment plan.

Clinical literature has explored the use of multi-modal aesthetic treatment approaches. A systematic review examined outcomes associated with combination laser treatments compared with single-modality approaches (Pour Mohammad et al. 2023), and the HARMONY Study reported high levels of patient satisfaction among individuals receiving comprehensive aesthetic treatment plans (Weinkle et al. 2018).

Within a longer-term treatment plan, PicoSure toning sessions are often spaced several weeks apart during the initial treatment phase, with maintenance sessions considered alongside other treatments as appropriate.

Research has also examined the use of energy-based devices alongside injectable treatments in aesthetic practice settings (Suh et al. 2025).

Your practitioner will design a personalised plan during consultation — discussing your concerns first, then recommending a staged approach tailored to your individual skin assessment and treatment goals.

When you’re ready, you can schedule a session to discuss your next steps at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery
Day 1 (treatment day)
Mild redness and warmth across the treated area. Pigmented spots may already appear slightly darker. These sensations often settle within a few hours.
Days 2–3
Areas of pigmentation may appear darker during this stage. The surrounding skin may feel slightly dry or textured. Small areas of dryness or light crusting may begin to appear on the treated spots.
Days 3–7
Darkened spots may be more noticeable during this period. Light crusting may begin to loosen during this stage. Some may start to flake. Do not pick — let the process happen naturally.
Weeks 1–2
Areas of pigmentation may gradually flake or shed as the skin renews. The surrounding skin tone may begin to appear more even during this stage. Some areas of pigmentation may take longer to respond and may require additional sessions.
Weeks 4
Changes in the appearance of pigmentation may begin to be noticeable around this time, depending on the individual treatment plan and skin response.
Subsequent sessions
Depending on the depth and extent of pigmentation, a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart may be recommended. Each session forms part of a staged treatment plan addressing pigmentation over time.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

A clear breakdown to help you assess your recovery

Normal

  • Mild redness lasting several hours after treatment
  • Temporary darkening of treated pigment spots
  • Slight dryness or texture change in the treated area
  • Small areas of light crusting over treated spots
  • Light flaking of darkened spots over one to two weeks

  • !Pain that is more than mild discomfort
  • !Pigmentation that continues to darken or change beyond two weeks
  • !White patches appearing in treated areas (possible hypopigmentation)
  • !Signs of infection: increasing redness, warmth, pus, or swelling

Seek urgent care if you experience

  • Severe blistering or burns
  • Signs of systemic infection (fever, chills, malaise)
  • Allergic reaction symptoms (widespread rash, difficulty breathing)

Your follow-up appointment

PicoSure toning is commonly performed as a series of treatments. Your practitioner will recommend a treatment plan based on the type and depth of your pigmentation — often involving three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.

At each follow-up session, your practitioner will assess how your skin has responded, photograph your progress, and adjust the treatment parameters as needed. Between sessions, consistent sun protection is an important part of supporting your skin during the treatment process.

Frequently asked questions about picosure toning aftercare

How many Picosure toning sessions will I need?

Treatment plans often involve three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, depending on the type and depth of pigmentation. Some types may require fewer sessions, while others may require a longer course of treatment.

You may apply mineral-based makeup after 24 hours if needed. Avoid heavy or full-coverage foundations for the first few days, as they may irritate the treated skin while it is recovering.

Sun protection is an important part of aftercare. UV exposure after pigment treatments may contribute to further pigmentation changes. Daily SPF 50+ use is strongly recommended.

Picosure can be used cautiously for melasma, though melasma is a complex condition influenced by hormones, genetics, and UV exposure. Treatment typically involves a cautious approach with conservative settings and careful sun protection. Your practitioner will discuss whether Picosure toning is appropriate for your specific situation.

Most patients describe the sensation as a light snapping or prickling on the skin. Topical anaesthetic can be applied if needed. Sensitive areas may feel more intense, and the sensation varies between patients.

Areas of pigmentation may appear darker after treatment and may gradually fade or flake over the following one to two weeks. Changes in the appearance of skin tone may begin to be noticeable around week four, depending on the individual response. Multiple sessions may be recommended as part of a staged treatment plan.

PicoSure toning may be used on sun-exposed areas beyond the face, including the hands, chest (décolletage), and neck. The same aftercare principles apply to all treated areas.

UV exposure after Picosure toning can trigger melanocytes to produce new pigment, potentially worsening the very condition the treatment is addressing. Even a single unprotected sun exposure can cause rebound hyperpigmentation. Protect the treated skin diligently.

Downtime is generally minimal. Many patients are able to return to normal activities soon after treatment. Some patients notice temporary darkening or light crusting of treated spots, which may be concealed with mineral makeup if desired.

PicoSure toning may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan alongside other technologies such as Lumecca IPL or Fotona 5D, depending on the skin concerns being addressed. Your medical professional will recommend the most appropriate combination and timing for your specific skin concerns.

This is a commonly observed response after treatment. After treatment, areas of pigmentation may appear temporarily darker before gradually flaking or fading as the skin recovers.  Temporary darkening of pigmentation is commonly observed during the recovery phase.

PicoSure toning may be incorporated into a broader treatment plan alongside bioremodelling and topical skincare as part of an overall skin management approach.  It can also be sequenced with Fotona 5D or Lumecca IPL to address multiple concerns in a coordinated plan. Your practitioner will sequence treatments based on your skin’s needs and your goals.
