Fotona 5D Treatment Aftercare
Your complete recovery guide from the Luxe Lips clinical team
Educational Resource — This page provides general aftercare guidance for patients who have received fotona 5d treatment. It does not constitute medical advice. If you have any concerns about your recovery, contact the Luxe Lips clinic directly.
Fotona 5D is a multi-pass laser treatment that combines up to five distinct laser modes designed to target concerns such as skin laxity, texture irregularities, and tone across the face and neck. Compared with earlier Fotona 4D protocols, some 5D treatment approaches incorporate an additional laser mode targeting the jawline and neck areas. Some protocols include an intraoral (inside-the-mouth) component designed to deliver laser energy to tissue within the oral cavity.
Because the treatment works across multiple tissue depths, recovery is generally comfortable but does require attention to sun protection and skincare in the days that follow. Every Fotona 5D session is tailored to the individual. Your practitioner adjusts the laser modes, depths, and passes based on your specific skin condition, concerns, and goals. This guide covers everything you need to know about Fotona 5D aftercare following your treatment at Luxe Lips.
Before your Fotona 5D appointment
Avoid deliberate sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks before your appointment. Tanned or sun-damaged skin increases the risk of adverse reactions and may mean your treatment needs to be postponed.
Discontinue retinol, retinoids, and any prescription-strength actives (such as tretinoin or hydroquinone) for a minimum of seven days before treatment. These ingredients thin the outer skin layer and can increase sensitivity.
Come to your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup, sunscreen, and moisturiser. This allows the laser energy to be delivered evenly and reduces the risk of surface reactions.
Ensure you are well hydrated in the 24 hours before your appointment. Maintaining good hydration may support overall skin comfort during and after treatment.
What to expect immediately after treatment
Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This sensation is commonly reported after laser treatment and usually settles within a few hours. Some patients experience a slight tightening sensation, particularly if the intraoral component was included.
Mild to moderate redness is common and may persist for several hours to a day, depending on the intensity of your treatment settings. In most cases, patients are comfortable returning to normal activities the same day, although some prefer to allow the redness to settle before social engagements.
If the intraoral handpiece was used, you may notice a slight tingling or warmth inside your cheeks. This sensation is usually temporary and generally settles without specific treatment. Staying well hydrated may help with overall comfort.

What to do and what to avoid during recovery
Apply SPF 50+ daily
Sun protection is an important part of aftercare following Fotona 5D. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning, and reapply every two hours if you are outdoors. A mineral (zinc-based) sunscreen is often used in the first few days as it may be less irritating to recently treated skin.
Keep your skin hydrated
Use a gentle, fragrance-free hydrating serum or moisturiser to support the skin barrier as it recovers. Hyaluronic acid serums are well tolerated and help maintain moisture levels in the treated skin.
Use a gentle cleanser
Cleanse your face with a mild, non-foaming cleanser for the first five to seven days. Avoid anything containing exfoliating acids, granules, or strong fragrances.
Stay hydrated internally
Drink plenty of water in the days following treatment. Maintaining good hydration supports overall skin recovery following treatment.
Sleep elevated if swelling occurs
If you notice mild puffiness around the jawline or lower face (particularly after the intraoral component), sleeping with an extra pillow for the first night can help reduce fluid retention.
Do not use retinol or active exfoliants for seven days
Retinol, AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), vitamin C serums at high concentrations, and any prescription actives should be paused for at least one week after treatment. These ingredients can compromise the skin barrier while it is still recovering.
Do not expose treated skin to direct sun
Avoid prolonged sun exposure for a minimum of two weeks after treatment. UV exposure can increase the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and may interfere with the skin’s recovery process. Wear a wide-brimmed hat when outdoors.
Do not use hot water on your face
For the first 48 hours, avoid hot showers directed at the face, saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs. Heat may worsen redness and swelling.
Do not apply makeup for 24 hours
Allow the skin to breathe and begin its recovery before applying any cosmetic products. After 24 hours, mineral-based makeup is generally safe to use.
Do not undertake intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours
Vigorous exercise raises core body temperature and increases blood flow to the face, which can prolong redness and swelling. Light walking is fine; save the gym session for day two or three.
Skincare and nutrition after Fotona 5D
Skincare
Cleanser
Use a gentle, pH-balanced, fragrance-free cleanser for the first week. Cream or milk cleansers are ideal. Avoid foaming cleansers or anything containing AHAs, BHAs, or exfoliating beads.
Hydrating serum
A hyaluronic acid serum applied to damp skin can help maintain hydration in the treated area. Many patients find it comfortable to use during the first week. Apply morning and evening for the first week.
Moisturiser
Use a simple, fragrance-free moisturiser to seal in hydration. Avoid moisturisers containing retinol, niacinamide at high percentages, or exfoliating ingredients during the first week.
Sunscreen
Daily SPF 50+ broad-spectrum protection is strongly recommended. Mineral sunscreens (containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are preferred in the first few days as they are less likely to cause irritation on sensitised skin. Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
When to resume actives
After seven days, you may gradually reintroduce your usual active products (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs/BHAs) one at a time. If your skin feels sensitised, wait a few extra days. There is no rush — the skin continues its natural recovery process in the weeks following treatment.
Food & Drink
Alcohol
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after treatment. Alcohol dilates blood vessels and can worsen redness, swelling, and dehydration, all of which slow recovery.
Anti-inflammatory foods
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, walnuts, flaxseed) and antioxidants (berries, leafy greens) support the body’s natural healing processes. While not strictly required, a nutrient-dense diet in the days following treatment gives your body the building blocks it needs for collagen production.
Hydration & Electrolytes
Laser treatments create a thermal effect that can increase transepidermal water loss. Drink at least 2 litres of water daily to maintain cellular hydration and support the skin’s natural healing rhythm. Including electrolyte-rich options like coconut water ensures your body retains the moisture necessary for optimal tissue repair during the first week.
Vitamin C & Zinc
While the Fotona laser stimulates deep collagen, your body requires specific co-factors to build that new scaffolding. Prioritise foods high in Vitamin C (citrus, berries, kiwi) and Zinc (pumpkin seeds, lean meats) during your recovery. These essential nutrients act as the fuel for the collagen production process that continues for several weeks following your treatment.
Understanding the collagen-building timeline
Fotona 5D works by delivering controlled thermal energy to multiple layers of the skin and underlying tissue. Some patients notice a temporary tightening sensation after treatment, which is associated with heat-related changes in existing collagen fibres.
Longer-term improvements are associated with gradual collagen remodelling that occurs in the weeks and months following treatment. These changes develop gradually and may take time before becoming noticeable. Many patients report gradual improvement in skin firmness, texture, and tone over the weeks following treatment, with changes continuing to develop for several months.
In some cases, practitioners may recommend a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart depending on individual goals and skin condition. Your medical professional will discuss the ideal treatment plan during your consultation.
Your treatment plan
At Luxe Lips Cosmetic Clinic Melbourne, Fotona 5D may be incorporated into a broader skin investment strategy depending on a patient’s goals and skin condition. Within our Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement framework, Fotona 5D sits at the intersection of skin quality and structural support. The multi-depth laser energy targets different tissue layers and is associated with collagen remodelling within the skin. Over time, some patients find that improving skin quality may reduce the need for additional volume-based treatments.
Fotona 5D may be combined with other treatments when sequenced strategically as part of a broader plan. Combining Fotona 5D with bioremodelling (like Rejuran) is sometimes used as part of a staged treatment approach aimed at improving overall skin quality before structural treatments.
Some practitioners sequence energy-based treatments alongside structural filler as part of a comprehensive aesthetic plan.
Published studies have explored combinations of energy devices and injectables in facial rejuvenation (Kim et al. 2014; Casabona & Michalany 2014).
In some treatment plans, Fotona 5D sessions may be spaced throughout the year depending on the patient’s goals and treatment response. Long-term studies have evaluated the use of energy-based devices alongside cosmetic injectables in aesthetic practice (Suh et al. 2025).
Your medical professional will design a personalised treatment plan during your consultation. This may include sequencing Fotona 5D alongside complementary treatments such as bioremodelling, structural filler, and skin laser treatments depending on your individual assessment.
When you’re ready, you can schedule a session to discuss your next steps at our Moonee Ponds, Camberwell, or Brighton cosmetic clinic.
Healing timeline
Day 1 (Treatment Day)
Mild redness and warmth across treated areas, similar to a gentle sunburn. Some tightness in the skin, particularly around the jawline. These sensations typically resolve within hours, though redness may linger until the following morning.
Day 2–3
Redness continues to fade. Skin may feel slightly dry or tight. Continue with gentle hydrating skincare and diligent sun protection. Many patients feel comfortable returning to normal activities by day two, although mild redness may still be present.
Week 1
Skin begins to feel smoother and may appear subtly refreshed. Any early tightening sensation following treatment may begin to settle during this time. You can resume your normal skincare routine, including active ingredients, after day seven.
Weeks 4–12
During this period, gradual changes within the skin may become more noticeable. Skin firmness, elasticity, and overall tone may gradually improve during this time as the skin continues its natural recovery process. Any changes tend to develop gradually over time.
Months 3–6
Changes in skin texture and firmness may continue to develop over the following months. Some patients notice their skin looking firmer and smoother. By this stage, the overall effect of treatment is often easier to assess, particularly after a series of sessions.
What is normal vs what warrants a call
Normal (No need to worry)
- ✓Mild redness lasting several hours to one day
- ✓Warmth or tingling across the treated area
- ✓Slight swelling, particularly around the jawline or lower face
- ✓Temporary tightening sensation in the skin
- ✓Mild tingling or warmth inside the mouth (if intraoral component was used)
- ✓Dryness or flaking in the first few days
These responses are a sign that the laser energy has been effectively delivered to the target tissues. They resolve on their own and do not require intervention beyond the skincare routine outlined above.
Contact the clinic if you experience

Common questions about Fotona 5D aftercare
Can I wear makeup after Fotona 5D?
We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before applying makeup. After that, mineral-based makeup is preferred for the first few days as it is less likely to irritate recovering skin.
When will I see results from Fotona 5D?
Some patients notice a temporary tightening sensation immediately after treatment. Changes in skin firmness and texture may become more noticeable over the following weeks, with gradual changes sometimes continuing for several months.
How many Fotona 5D sessions do I need?
Some treatment plans involve a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart, depending on individual goals and skin condition. Your practitioner will recommend the optimal number based on your goals and skin condition during your consultation.
Is Fotona 5D painful?
Patients often describe the treatment as feeling warm on the skin. The intraoral component may feel unusual, though most patients tolerate it well. Topical anaesthetic is not typically required, though it can be applied if needed.
Can I exercise after Fotona 5D?
We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after treatment to allow redness and any mild swelling to subside. Light walking is fine from the same day.
What is the intraoral component of Fotona 5D?
The intraoral handpiece delivers laser energy from inside the mouth to the inner cheek and perioral area. This delivers energy to the inner cheek and perioral tissues from inside the mouth. Treating these areas internally allows the practitioner to address tissue layers that are not reached by external treatment alone.
Is Fotona 5D suitable for darker skin tones?
Fotona uses an Nd:YAG wavelength, which is commonly used in aesthetic medicine for a range of skin types. However, a thorough skin assessment during your consultation is essential to ensure the treatment is appropriate for your specific skin type and concerns.
Can Fotona 5D be combined with other treatments?
Yes, Fotona 5D is often combined with other treatments as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan. Your practitioner will advise on appropriate timing and sequencing during your consultation.
What is the difference between Fotona 4D and 5D?
Fotona 5D builds on the 4D protocol by adding an additional laser mode designed to address the jawline and neck area. The additional mode allows practitioners to include the jawline and neck within the same treatment session. Your practitioner will assess your concerns and recommend whether the 4D or 5D protocol is most appropriate for your goals.
How does Fotona 5D complement injectable treatments?
Energy devices like Fotona 5D extend the longevity of injectable results by stimulating your body’s own collagen production. Clinical evidence shows that radiofrequency and laser treatment before filler creates stronger structural support that protects and extends the filler result. Over time, this reduces reliance on volume alone and builds a more resilient dermal foundation. Your practitioner will sequence these treatments strategically as part of your personalised plan.
How long does redness last after Fotona 5D?
Redness is typically mild and resolves within a few hours to one day. It is uncommon for redness to persist beyond 24 hours, although some patients may experience redness for up to 48 hours depending on treatment settings and individual skin response.
