Lumecca is a next-generation IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment that uses broadband light to target two things in the skin: the melanin behind pigmentation and the haemoglobin behind redness.
The light is delivered in short, high-intensity pulses. Melanin and haemoglobin absorb it as heat, breaking down the pigment and collapsing the vessels behind facial redness. What separates Lumecca from conventional IPL is peak power. It generates a higher output in each pulse, which makes it more selective for the target and appropriate across a wider range of skin tones than older IPL systems.

Your treatment session
Your treatment is carried out by your nurse in a calm, unhurried session.
A full Lumecca session typically runs 40 to 60 minutes, including preparation, the treatment pass, and post-session review.
Lumecca is generally considered comfortable. Most people describe the pulses as a brief warmth or a light snap, and a cooling gel is typically applied to the area before and after the session.
Recovery and aftercare
Because Lumecca is non-invasive, downtime is typically minimal. Most people are comfortable returning to everyday activities the same day. Either way, our team remains by your side with thoughtful aftercare and ongoing support.

How Lumecca treatment progresses over time
Lumecca is typically approached as a course of sessions. A standard protocol runs one to three sessions depending on the concern being treated, though pronounced sun damage or vascular conditions such as rosacea may call for up to four. Sessions are spaced three to four weeks apart, which allows for cellular turnover and gives the epidermis time to fully recover before another round of high pulse energy.
After each session, the treated pigment moves through a predictable sequence. Between days 1–3 expect it to darken as pigment rises to the surface taking on a textured appearance often called the “coffee ground” effect. Days 4–7, the skin goes through a shedding phase where darkened, micro-crusted “coffee grounds” naturally flake off during routine, gentle washing and skin may begin to look clearer.
Weeks 2–4 is typically when vascular clearance begins. While pigment flakes off early, damaged blood vessels take longer to clear. Between weeks 4–6 the treatment has reached its potential and visible clarity in skin tone and reduced vascular redness should be apparent.
For sun damage and pigmentation, the improvement in tone may last somewhere between six and twelve months, depending on how the skin is cared for afterwards. Individual timelines vary with the concern being treated, skin type, and consistency with sun protection between sessions.
Results from Lumecca are not permanent. The skin continues to age, and ongoing UV exposure and natural vascular dilation gradually reintroduce the concerns that were treated. Some people may benefit from a maintenance session once or twice a year, particularly for concerns like pigmentation and dark spots. Your nurse will discuss what maintenance may suit you based on how your initial course settled.
Sun protection is important both between sessions and after the course completes. Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily is generally recommended for facial treatments. It is even more important in the case of Lumecca. When unprotected skin is subjected to harsh UV rays, the body produces new pigment to protect itself, resulting in fresh sun spots.
Because Lumecca works on pigment and vascular concerns with intense pulsed light, your nurse may also discuss supportive skincare (barrier support, appropriate topical care), where relevant.

Can Lumecca be used on darker skin tones?
Lumecca IPL is generally not recommended for dark skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI) because it can cause burns and dark spots.
Skin types I – III are considered the safest and most effective range for Lumecca, while type IV skin types should only be approached by highly trained AHPRA registered medical professionals while using special handpieces and very low energy settings.

Can I have Lumecca IPL if I've recently had a tan or used fake tan?
No. Recent sun exposure, a natural tan, or fake tan all change how the light interacts with your skin. A tan adds pigment to the surface, which draws the energy away from the intended target and raises the risk of an uneven response.
Fake tan sits on the skin and reacts unpredictably under IPL, so it must be fully removed before treatment.
Plan any Lumecca session in advance of tanning or holidays in the sun, or speak with a medical professional about safe timing during your consultation.
Can I combine Lumecca IPL with other treatments?
Lumecca is often approached as part of a wider skin plan. Whether treatments can run in the same visit or need to be spaced out depends on what the other treatment does to the skin and how much recovery each one requires.

Can Lumecca IPL be used on areas other than the face?
Yes. Lumecca is commonly used on the neck, décolletage, and hands, which are the areas that show sun damage and pigmentation alongside the face. Any area with accumulated sun exposure or visible vascular concerns can be considered.
The suitability of a given area still depends on the skin there and the concern being treated, which is assessed individually.

How is Lumecca IPL different from the IPL offered at beauty salons?
Lumecca is a medical-grade IPL device delivered by AHPRA registered nurses, not a beauty-salon light device operated by a therapist. The power output and the depth of clinical assessment behind the treatment are the core differences.
A medical setting also means your skin type, history, and suitability are assessed by a qualified medical professional before any energy is delivered, and any adverse response is managed clinically.
Salon IPL and medical IPL are different tiers of treatment, delivered under different levels of training and oversight.
Does Lumecca IPL require a consultation first?
Yes. In Australia, a consultation and assessment are required before any medical cosmetic procedure, and Lumecca IPL is no exception.
The consultation exists to confirm your skin is suitable, identify anything that would make treatment unsafe, and determine the correct settings for your skin type.
This is a regulatory requirement across the industry, and it protects you from an inappropriate or unsafe treatment.
How soon before an event should I have Lumecca IPL?
Allow enough time for the full post-session sequence to complete. Treated pigment darkens for the first few days, then sheds across roughly a week, so the skin is visibly working through the process in that window.
For an event, leave at least two and up to six weeks after a session to give the pigment time to clear and the skin time to settle.
