Rejuran is a polynucleotide (PN) injectable treatment derived from salmon DNA that is used in aesthetic medicine. This Rejuran aftercare guide covers general aftercare guidance for patients who have received Rejuran Healer, Rejuran i (under-eye), or Rejuran Scar treatments.

The core aftercare principles are the same, with variant-specific notes covered in detail below. Rejuran is not a filler. It does not add volume and is generally used as part of certain skin treatment plans. If you are wondering about Rejuran bumps and how long they last, you will find detailed information in this guide. They are a normal and expected part of recovery.

Changes following treatment may develop gradually over time, and treatment plans often involve a series of sessions.Your medical professional has selected the specific Rejuran variant and injection technique based on your individual skin concerns and goals.

Before your Rejuran appointment

Preparation prior to your appointment can support the recovery process

AVOID BLOOD-THINNING SUPPLEMENTS AND MEDICATIONS

Stop taking fish oil, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and aspirin-based products at least one week before your appointment. Rejuran involves multiple small injections, and blood-thinning substances may increase the likelihood of bruising.  If you take prescription blood thinners, do not stop them without consulting your prescribing doctor – but do let your medical professional know.

NO ALCOHOL FOR 48 HOURS BEFORE TREATMENT

Alcohol thins the blood and dilates blood vessels. Because Rejuran involves multiple injection points, alcohol consumption beforehand may increase the likelihood of bruising.

INFORM YOUR PRACTITIONER OF ALL MEDICATIONS AND SKIN CONDITIONS

Disclose every medication, supplement, and herbal remedy you are currently taking. Also inform your practitioner of any active skin conditions – eczema flare-ups, active acne, cold sores, or infections in the treatment area may require the session to be postponed.

STOP RETINOL AND ACTIVE SKINCARE 3 TO 5 DAYS BEFORE

Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, and any exfoliating products should be paused at least three days before treatment. These ingredients can sensitise the skin, which may increase discomfort during the procedure.

ARRIVE WITH CLEAN SKIN

Come to your appointment with a freshly cleansed face, free of makeup, SPF, and moisturiser. This allows the practitioner to prep the skin properly and apply topical numbing cream if needed.

CONSIDER STARTING ARNICA

If your practitioner recommends it, begin taking arnica tablets two to three days before your appointment. Given the multiple injection points involved in Rejuran, some practitioners recommend arnica as part of pre-treatment preparation.

What to expect immediately after treatment

Rejuran is administered through multiple small injections across the treatment area. Depending on the variant and treatment area, this may involve multiple injection points. A topical numbing cream is typically applied beforehand to manage discomfort.

The most distinctive feature of Rejuran recovery is the appearance of small raised bumps (papules) at each injection site. These tiny, dome-shaped bumps occur where the product has been placed just beneath the skin surface. They are a common and expected part of recovery and usually settle on their own within one to three days.

Redness and mild swelling across the treated area are expected immediately after the procedure. The skin may look flushed and feel warm.

For Rejuran i (under-eye), swelling may be more noticeable due to the delicate nature of the periorbital skin. Bruising is possible at any injection site. Given the number of injections involved, some degree of bruising is common and usually settles within five to seven days.

The treatment area may feel slightly textured or bumpy for the first few days due to the papules. This is temporary and typically resolves as the skin settles.

What to do and what to avoid during recovery

The Dos
Leave the papules alone

The small bumps at injection sites occur where the product has been placed beneath the skin. Do not pick, squeeze, scratch, or press on them. They usually settle on their own within one to three days. Interfering with them increases the risk of infection and can cause scarring.

Keep the skin hydrated

Apply a plain, fragrance-free hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is ideal) as directed by your practitioner. Hydration can help reduce dryness and the sensation of tightness after treatment.

Apply SPF 50+ from the day after treatment

Sun protection is important during the recovery period. Post-treatment skin may be more sensitive to UV exposure, and unprotected sun exposure can increase the risk of pigmentation changes.

Stay hydrated internally

Drink at least two litres of water per day. Maintaining hydration is generally recommended as part of recovery after injectable treatments.

Sleep on a clean pillowcase

Use a fresh, clean pillowcase on the night of your treatment. Bacteria from a used pillowcase can enter the injection sites and increase the risk of breakouts or infection.

Be patient and complete your treatment course

Changes following treatment are gradual and may become noticeable over several weeks. Rejuran is typically performed as a course of sessions rather than a single treatment, with sessions often spaced two to four weeks apart. Treatment plans commonly involve three to four sessions, depending on your practitioner’s assessment and your individual treatment goals. Attending all scheduled sessions allows your practitioner to monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan if needed.

Contact the clinic with any concerns

If something does not look or feel right, call the clinic. The Luxe Lips team has a 24/7 medical professional available. No question is too small and no concern is too early.

The Don’ts
Do not touch or pick at the papules

This is an important rule during recovery. The small bumps are tempting to touch but must be left alone. Picking or squeezing them can introduce bacteria, cause scarring, and delay resolution. They usually settle on their own within one to three days.

Do not apply makeup for at least 12 hours

The multiple injection sites need time to close. Applying makeup too soon may introduce bacteria to the injection sites. Wait at least 12 hours — ideally 24 — before applying any makeup.

Do not use retinol or active skincare for 5 to 7 days

Retinol, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C serums, niacinamide at high concentrations, and exfoliating products should be avoided until the injection sites have settled. Introducing active ingredients too early may increase irritation.

Do not exercise or sweat heavily for 24 to 48 hours

Sweat may irritate the treated area and introduce bacteria to the injection sites. Avoid the gym, saunas, hot yoga, and any activity that causes heavy perspiration for at least 24 hours, preferably 48.

Do not drink alcohol for at least 48 hours

Alcohol can increase blood flow and may worsen swelling or bruising. It may also interfere with the normal recovery process following injectable treatments. Wait a minimum of 48 hours.

Do not swim or use hot tubs for 72 hours

Chlorinated pools, ocean water, and hot tubs may contain bacteria and irritants. Because Rejuran involves multiple injection sites, exposure to these environments may increase the risk of irritation or infection.

Do not expose the treatment area to direct sun

UV exposure during recovery can increase the risk of pigmentation changes. Wear SPF 50+ daily and avoid prolonged direct sun for at least two weeks.

Skincare and nutrition after Rejuran treatment

What to apply, eat, and drink during recovery

Skincare

Days 1-3: Minimal products only

Cleanse with a gentle, soap-free cleanser using lukewarm water — no hot water. Apply a fragrance-free hydrating serum and a plain moisturiser. Avoid applying additional products such as toners, essences, and sheet masks during this period. The injection sites are still settling during this time.

Day 1 onwards: Daily SPF is strongly recommended

Apply a physical or mineral SPF 50+ sunscreen every morning from the day after treatment. Reapply if you are outdoors for extended periods. Inadequate sun protection can increase the risk of post-treatment hyperpigmentation.

Days 5-7: Gradual reintroduction of actives

Once the skin shows no signs of sensitivity, tightness, or residual bumps, you can begin reintroducing your regular products one at a time. Start with gentler products (vitamin C, niacinamide) before adding retinol a few days later. If any product causes stinging or redness, pause use and allow the skin more time to settle.

Products to avoid during recovery

Retinol, AHAs (glycolic, lactic), BHAs (salicylic acid), benzoyl peroxide, physical scrubs, fragranced moisturisers, and alcohol-based toners. These products may irritate skin that has recently undergone multiple injections.

Food & Drink

Meal and drink planning during recovery

Avoiding alcohol as outlined above is an important dietary consideration during recovery. Choose water, herbal tea, or sparkling water when socialising – maintaining hydration is generally recommended during recovery.

Support healing through nutrition

Beyond the hydration advice above, include water-rich foods in your meals — soups, smoothies, and fresh fruits all contribute. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants and protein is generally recommended during recovery.

Consider anti-inflammatory foods

While not essential, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds), antioxidants (berries and leafy greens), and vitamin C (citrus and capsicum) are often included as part of a balanced diet during recovery.

Rejuran Healer

Rejuran Healer is a commonly used polynucleotide formulation in aesthetic practice. It is used in treatment plans that focus on overall skin quality across the face. Treatment involves multiple small injections distributed across the face, targeting areas where skin quality has declined. The product is placed in small amounts beneath the skin using multiple injection points.

What to expect: Papules (small raised bumps) at injection sites are the hallmark of Rejuran Healer treatment. They usually settle within one to three days. Redness and mild swelling are common for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Treatment course: Changes in skin appearance may become noticeable as the treatment course progresses. Some patients report improvements in skin hydration and overall radiance after the early sessions. Further changes in the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and elasticity may become more noticeable across a typical treatment course of three to four sessions.

Your practitioner selects the injection depth and distribution pattern based on your individual skin concerns and facial anatomy.

Rejuran i (under-eye)

Rejuran i is a thinner, lower-viscosity formulation specifically designed for the delicate periorbital (under-eye) area. It is commonly used in treatment plans addressing concerns around the under-eye area, such as dark circles, fine lines, and changes in skin appearance.

The under-eye skin is the thinnest on the face, which is why a specialised formulation is used rather than the standard Rejuran Healer. The thinner consistency allows for precise placement within this delicate area.

What to expect differently: Swelling around the eyes may be more noticeable than with facial Rejuran Healer, simply because the periorbital skin is thinner and more prone to fluid accumulation. Cold compresses are commonly recommended for comfort in this area. Papules may be slightly more visible under the eyes due to the thin skin, but they usually settle within one to three days.

Special considerations: Avoid rubbing your eyes during recovery. Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first two nights, which may help reduce under-eye swelling.  If you wear contact lenses, consider wearing glasses for the first 24 hours to avoid touching the eye area.

Results: Changes in the appearance of the under-eye area may become noticeable as the treatment course progresses. The under-eye area responds gradually, and patience is essential. Treatment plans often involve multiple sessions spaced over several weeks, and changes may continue to develop over time.

Rejuran Scar

Rejuran Scar is a higher-concentration polynucleotide formulation used in treatment plans addressing the appearance of acne scars, ice pick scars, rolling scars, and post-surgical scarring.  The formulation differs in concentration compared with other Rejuran variants.

Treatment involves injecting directly into and around individual scars. The polynucleotide preparation is delivered into the scar tissue itself, where it interacts with the surrounding dermal structures and may contribute to gradual changes in scar texture and appearance over time.

What to expect differently: Because injections are concentrated into scar tissue (which has a different texture and blood supply than normal skin), the treatment may feel slightly more uncomfortable in these areas. Papules at injection sites may be more prominent due to the higher concentration of the product. Redness and swelling may be more localised to the scarred areas being treated.

Recovery considerations: Scar tissue responds more slowly than healthy skin. Changes in the appearance of scarred areas may develop gradually over the course of treatment rather than after a single session. Treatment plans commonly involve a series of three to four sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Results: Changes in the appearance of scarred areas may become more noticeable as the treatment course progresses. Rejuran Scar may be used alongside other treatments such as microneedling or energy-based devices as part of a broader treatment plan. Your practitioner will advise on suitable options based on your individual assessment.

Understanding polynucleotide therapy

Polynucleotides (PN) are fragments of DNA – in the case of Rejuran, derived from salmon DNA – that are purified and processed for use in aesthetic treatments. They are biocompatible and biodegradable.

When introduced into the skin, polynucleotide preparations interact with fibroblasts and other skin cells and are associated with several biological processes involved in skin function:

Cellular activity: Polynucleotides have been studied for their interactions with skin cells involved in normal cellular maintenance and renewal.

Dermal structure: Research has explored how polynucleotides may interact with fibroblasts and processes related to collagen formation within the dermis.

Inflammatory response: Some studies describe polynucleotides as having properties that may influence inflammatory signalling within the skin.

Hydration: Polynucleotide molecules are capable of binding water, which is one reason they are often discussed in relation to skin hydration.

Wound response: Polynucleotides have also been studied in the context of wound-healing processes and tissue repair.

The treatment does not add volume or change the structure of the face. It is used in treatment plans focused on overall skin quality rather than structural volume. For this reason, changes in skin appearance typically develop gradually rather than immediately.

Rejuran is often combined with other treatments as part of a holistic skin plan. Treatments such as microneedling, bioremodelling, dermal fillers, and energy-based skin laser treatments may be used alongside polynucleotide treatments as part of a multi-modal approach.

Your medical professional will recommend the most appropriate combination based on your individual skin assessment and goals.

Your treatment plan

How Rejuran fits into your skin investment strategy

At Luxe Lips, treatment planning follows a deliberate sequence: Skin Quality → Structure → Refinement. Rejuran sits within the Skin Quality pillar of this framework and is used in treatment plans focused on overall skin quality.

Rejuran is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), which means it has undergone regulatory assessment for use in Australia. Clinical literature has explored the use of polynucleotides in aesthetic dermatology.

For example, Lee et al. (2022) reported findings from a randomised, double-blind split-face study investigating polynucleotides in the periocular area. Lampridou et al. (2025) later reviewed clinical studies examining the use of polynucleotides across a range of aesthetic applications.

Rejuran differs from many other treatments in that it uses polynucleotide fragments derived from DNA. These preparations are studied in the context of skin biology and processes involving fibroblasts and collagen within the dermis. For this reason, it may be incorporated alongside treatments that work through different mechanisms.

Variant-specific combination advice:

  • Rejuran Healer is used in treatment plans addressing overall skin quality across the face. It is sometimes used alongside bioremodelling treatments, which use hyaluronic acid-based formulations to support skin hydration. When used together, these treatments may form part of a broader approach to skin quality before structural treatments are considered.
  • Rejuran i is formulated for the delicate under-eye area and may be used alongside tear trough filler in treatment plans where both skin quality and volume considerations are assessed. Your medical professional will determine the appropriate sequence and timing of treatments based on your individual assessment.
  • Rejuran S is used in treatment plans addressing acne and post-surgical scarring and may be used alongside microneedling. Both treatments are studied in relation to processes involving collagen within the dermis and may be used together as part of a broader treatment plan for scar management.

Like all skin quality investments at Luxe Lips, Rejuran follows a structured long-term plan. Treatment plans commonly involve an initial course of three to four sessions spaced several weeks apart, with maintenance sessions considered periodically thereafter. This staged approach is designed to support ongoing management of skin quality over time.

Your medical professional will design your individual plan during your consultation, which is the most important part of the entire journey.

Healing timeline

Day by day, what to expect during recovery

Day 1 (Day of treatment)

Small papules (raised bumps) visible at each injection site. Redness and mild swelling across the treated area. The skin feels warm and slightly textured. For Rejuran i, under-eye swelling may be more noticeable. Possible pinpoint bleeding at injection sites. Do not touch or pick at the papules.

Days 2–3

Papules begin to flatten and absorb. Most bumps typically resolve by around day three. Redness usually begins to fade during this period. Any bruising becomes more visible as it develops. Skin may feel dry or slightly tight. Resume gentle skincare and SPF application.

Days 3-5

Papules have resolved for many patients by this stage.  Skin is normalising. Redness has subsided. Any remaining bruising is transitioning through colour changes. Some patients notice changes in how the skin feels, such as increased softness or hydration.

Week 1-2

Injection sites are typically healed by this stage. Some patients report early changes in skin hydration and overall radiance.  Skin recovery continues beneath the surface, and your next session may be scheduled during this period.

Week 4-8 (Per Session)

Biological processes within the skin continue during this stage of the treatment course.  Changes in the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and overall skin quality may become more noticeable during this stage. Each session builds on the previous one as part of the overall treatment plan.

Months 3-6 (After Full Course)

The overall outcome of the treatment course is typically assessed here.. Patients may notice changes in skin hydration and overall skin appearance. Changes in the appearance of fine lines, skin texture, and overall skin quality may be observed over time. Maintenance sessions may be recommended.

What is normal vs what warrants a call

Normal

  • Small raised papules (bumps) at injection sites, resolving in 1 to 3 days
  • Redness and warmth across the treated area for 24 to 48 hours
  • Mild swelling, particularly noticeable under the eyes with Rejuran i
  • Bruising at or near injection sites
  • Skin feeling slightly textured or bumpy for the first 2 to 3 days
  • Mild tightness or dryness and temporary increase in skin sensitivity

The papules are the hallmark of Rejuran treatment and are not a cause for concern. Every patient responds differently. Some experience all of these symptoms, others very few.

Contact the clinic promptly if you experience

  • !Papules that remain raised and do not flatten after five days
  • !Redness that worsens after day three or skin that feels hot to the touch
  • !Pus-filled bumps or pustules (distinct from smooth normal papules)
  • !Significant swelling that increases after day two rather than subsiding
  • !An unusual rash or hive-like reaction

Seek Urgent Care Immediately

  • Signs of infection: spreading redness with warmth, pus, fever, or red streaking
  • Severe allergic reaction: widespread hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling
  • Intense, worsening pain that is not relieved by paracetamol
  • Sudden vision changes (especially if treated near the eye with Rejuran i)

If you experience any urgent symptoms, contact the Luxe Lips clinic immediately. For life-threatening concerns, call 000.

Your follow-up appointment

Rejuran is typically delivered as a treatment course rather than a single session. Sessions are commonly spaced two to four weeks apart, and treatment plans often involve three to four sessions, depending on the individual treatment plan.

At each session, your practitioner will assess how your skin has responded to the previous treatment and adjust the approach if needed — including injection depth, distribution pattern, and the specific Rejuran variant used. Photographs are taken at each appointment to objectively track changes in skin quality over time.

After completing the initial course, maintenance sessions may be recommended periodically as part of an ongoing treatment plan. The frequency depends on your individual skin response, concerns, and goals.

Bring any questions about your recovery, skincare routine, or treatment plan to each appointment. If you are interested in combining Rejuran with other treatments (microneedling, bioremodelling, energy devices), your practitioner can discuss suitable options and timing based on your individual assessment.

If you are ready to discuss your treatment plan, book your consultation now.

Common questions about Rejuran aftercare

What are the bumps after Rejuran and how long do they last?

The small raised bumps (papules) are the polynucleotide solution sitting just beneath the skin surface at each injection point. They are completely normal and are the most distinctive feature of Rejuran recovery. They typically flatten and resolve within about one to three days. Do not pick or squeeze them.

Changes in skin appearance typically develop gradually over several weeks following each session. Some patients report changes in skin hydration and overall radiance after the early sessions. The overall outcome of the treatment course is usually assessed several months after the final session.

Wait at least 12 hours — ideally 24 — before applying makeup. The multiple injection sites need time to close to minimise infection risk. When you do apply makeup, ensure all brushes and sponges are freshly cleaned.

A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment to minimise discomfort. The procedure involves many small injections, so some sensation is expected — most patients describe it as a mild pricking feeling. Areas with thinner skin (under-eyes, forehead) may be slightly more sensitive. The discomfort is temporary and subsides quickly after treatment.

Rejuran i is specifically formulated for the delicate periorbital area. It has a thinner consistency than standard Rejuran Healer and is formulated for use in the delicate skin under the eyes. Swelling may be more noticeable in this area due to the thin skin.

Rejuran Scar is a higher-concentration formulation used in treatment plans that may address acne scars, ice pick scars, rolling scars, and post-surgical scarring. It is delivered into and around scar tissue, where polynucleotide preparations are studied in relation to processes involving fibroblasts and collagen within the dermis. Changes in the appearance of scarred areas may develop gradually over the treatment course. Rejuran Scar may also be used alongside treatments such as microneedling as part of a broader treatment plan.

Following a complete treatment course, changes in skin appearance may be maintained for several months, depending on individual factors such as age, skin condition, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Maintenance sessions may be recommended periodically as part of an ongoing treatment plan.

Treatment plans commonly involve an initial course of three to four sessions spaced two to four weeks apart, with maintenance sessions considered periodically thereafter. The exact number depends on your individual skin concerns, the Rejuran variant used, and your practitioner’s clinical assessment. Your practitioner will tailor the plan to your skin’s needs and assess your response at each session.

Yes, Rejuran may be incorporated alongside treatments such as bioremodelling, microneedling, and energy-based devices as part of a broader skin quality treatment plan. Each treatment works through different biological pathways. Polynucleotide preparations are studied in relation to processes involving fibroblasts and collagen within the skin, bioremodelling uses hyaluronic acid formulations associated with hydration, and microneedling involves controlled micro-injuries that initiate natural skin responses. Your practitioner will sequence treatments appropriately based on your individual plan.

Rejuran Healer is the standard formulation commonly used in treatment plans addressing overall skin quality across the face. Rejuran i is formulated for the delicate under-eye area and has a thinner, lower-viscosity gel suited to the periorbital skin. Rejuran S has a higher viscosity and concentration and is used in treatment plans addressing acne scarring and post-surgical scars. Each variant has a different gel concentration suited to particular treatment areas, and your practitioner selects the appropriate formulation based on your assessment and treatment goals.
